  • Halloween Countdown: Extraordinary Tales

    October 9th, 2015

Just in time for Halloween, Extraordinary Tales is hitting theaters. It’s a series of five animated adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe, narrated by some of the greatest horror icons of all time.

    et

Each story is done in a different style of animation. Featured in this film are “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Masque of Red Death” and “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar.” Narrators include Christopher Lee, Roger Corman, Guillermo Del Toro and Bela Lugosi (!!!).

    Who’s going to see this?

  • Halloween Countdown: Vampire Pumpkin

    October 8th, 2015

This is perhaps my favorite piece of Halloween folk art I’ve seen this year: the Gourd Vampire Pumpkin.

    il_570xN.661694887_midr

Of course, the face is masterfully done…but I think the yellow-green eyes really MAKE this piece. Isn’t he hypnotic in the most perfectly insane way?

  • Halloween Countdown: Bloody Brain Cake

    October 7th, 2015

This would be the perfect cake for a Halloween party (the “bloody” syrup coating is a nice touch).

    1444184675-0

Apparently this was done in honor of The Walking Dead (which I admittedly stopped watching a couple seasons ago because I started getting bored with it…zombies are very overdone these days so it takes a lot to keep my attention).

I’d love to try my hand at this cake. Watch the tutorial video!

  • Halloween Countdown: The Burning Miser

    October 6th, 2015

Long Forgotten recently made a post about a piece of Haunted Mansion concept art that never made it into the actual attraction: The Burning Miser.burn_zpsggcjesja

This miser, who has clearly sold his soul to devil, was supposed to appear in the hall of changing portraits. Here is the progression, in a series of sketches:

    4_zps2bhrv9pk

    5_zps9r77ppxc

I think this would’ve made a great addition to the Mansion. The devil sneaking up from behind the Miser to claim his soul via spontaneous combustion powder is certainly creepy enough to make the cut.

  • Halloween Countdown: Creepy Makeup

    October 5th, 2015

This is not your average Halloween makeup. Are you ready to see some stellar skills and masterful makeup illusions?

    Creepy-Monster

The effect itself is great, and I imagine it must be extra surreal to see the human mouth talking within this design.

Brilliant use of an add-on prosthetic chin!

  • Halloween Countdown: Switchin’ Kitten

    October 4th, 2015

I think the fact that this vintage Tom and Jerry short takes place in an archetypal creepy castle on a stormy night, and features a Dr. Frankenstein-esque mad scientist (who incidentally appears to be on both helium and speed) qualifies it as prime Halloween season viewing.

I love a good collection of outlandish lab equipment, and boy does this castle deliver in that department.

Also of note, a brief scene involving a large tome entitled LOVABLE CATS (which is, unfortunately, not in print).

What was your favorite old Halloween cartoon?

  • Halloween Countdown: Ghost Church

    October 3rd, 2015

St. George’s Church in the Czech Republic, constructed in 1352, has been abandoned since the 1960’s since the locals felt it was a bad omen when the ceiling caved in during a funeral. Yet its pews are populated with shrouded ghostly figures.

Although it would’ve made a great story if these pious undead had appeared spontaneously, they were actually commissioned as an installation.

“The figures represent the ghosts of Sudeten Germans who lived in Lukova before World War Two and who came to pray at this church every Sunday,” says the artist Jakub Hadrava, a third year sculpture student. “I hope to show the world that this place had a past and it was a normal part of everyday life, but that fate has a huge influence on our lives.”

The installation was designed to attract tourism and help garner funds to restore the church. I’d certainly pay a visit if I could.

  • Halloween Countdown: Gentleman Crow

    October 2nd, 2015

I love when readers/fellow bloggers share their own creations with me! Halloween decorations can all start to look the same after a while. The lovely Jori of Shivers of Delight decided to change it up and craft this “Gentleman Crow” to grace her front porch this year.

You can see some in-progress shots and read more about it HERE! You’ll find lots of other spooky goodness on the site as well.

Are you doing any unique decorations?

  • Halloween Countdown: Top 100 Classic Horror Movies

    October 1st, 2015

Welcome to this year’s SWS Halloween Countdown! I thought I’d get things going with a fantastic IMDB list of the Top 100 Classic Horror Movies.

    Classic-Horror-Collage

This list covers some excellent classic AND obscure titles, many of which I hope to re-watch this season (I’ve seen about 95 out of 100 on this list, which I’m not sure should be a point of pride or embarrassment…so we’ll call it “alignment with my own passions.”).

How many have you seen? What are your favorites?

  • Annemarieke Kloosterhof

    September 30th, 2015

Annemarieke Kloosterhof makes gorgeous two and three dimensional paper cutting projects.

Of particular interest to me is her “Vital” series, in which she “[tries] to capture the essence of the different diseases people struggle with, and the feeling it gives them, hiding amongst the delicate veins are animals and insects to be found, portraying the delicacy of the human body and its vital organs.”
    003

The “invaders” in each organ are not quite visible at first glance, but upon closer inspection they become apparent.
