  • Eduardo Recife

    November 4th, 2008

Misprinted Type is a collection of multimedia treats by Eduardo Recife. I’m a big fan of his collage work (anatomy, doughnuts, Victorian inklings…can’t go wrong in my book!).

Ooh…my fingers are itching to glue something after looking at his work!

The site began as a place to post bits of art, but eventually came to incorporate downloadable fonts, brushes and other tools.

  • Thrift Horror Week: Tuna and Suicide

    November 3rd, 2008

First, I should say that many of this week’s photos come from the incredible Thrift Horror community on Livejournal and I *wish* I had saved the proper credit info when I gathered these long ago (I don’t keep a livejournal, but there are some fabulous communities).

    Let’s start slowly…

I really enjoy the fact that someone may have purchased this for his or her home. Perhaps it was given away as a company promotional item, but I prefer to believe that someone chose Charlie the Tuna to illuminate the living room.

Somebody please tell Suicide Dog that it’s going to be okay. Or tell me if you can figure out what may be going on in this ceramic nightmare besides a suicide attempt.

Is that liquor or poison in his other hand? Does he have a backup plan?

  • Light Blubs

    November 2nd, 2008

No, that’s not a typo in the subject line. Pieke Bergmans produces viral art; traditional objects that have begun to move, bend, ooze, stain and otherwise “infect” their surroundings by breaking free from the form constraints inherent in their traditional medium or design.

    Among my favorites: LIGHT BLUBS

You may wonder: What is a light blub?? The answer is simple: it is a light bulb that has gone way out of line. Infected by the dreaded Design Virus, these Blubs have taken on all kinds of forms and sizes you wouldn’t expect from such well behaving and reliable little products. Nevertheless, they seem to be enjoying their new free existences.

  • Paul Shih

    November 2nd, 2008

I love Paul Shih’s new Stolen Donut shirt:

He also has an adorable print entitled “Naturally Greedy” featuring a donut pirate:

    Yarr, me pastries! So cute.

Get them at his online shop.

  • Car of the Future

    November 1st, 2008

At first glance, I thought this was a piece of fantasy retrofuturism designed decades ago. It’s actually an illustration from a recent NY Times article concerning the transformation of automobiles into “living rooms on wheels.”

(I don’t think dad’s automatic haircut will come out very well)

I don’t know about you, but I find this image mildly terrifying (though humorous); vehicles may indeed evolve into encapsulated, Attention Deficit pods. The bombardment of simultaneous media and activities ensures that we’ll be able to do absolutely everything except notice our surroundings and engage in actual human conversation.

  • Pooch Island

    November 1st, 2008

Pooch Island is the website of artist Michael Pucciarelli. It’s a delightful, dizzying sideshow infused with cultural symbolism.

This may be my favorite. NEMO’S ETHNOBOTANICAL EXPERIMENT NO. 5:

Raised on a diet of Ray Harryhausen films, H. P. Lovecraft novels, comics, Walt Disney World and other Florida tourist traps, Pooch paints images that seem to exist in a bizarre afterlife. His art is a visual cocktail of these influences—with a shot of lowbrow culture—shaken and stirred, then served up in a souvenir tiki skull on the Day of the Dead. -From artist bio on site

  • The SheWalksCheaply Costume Project

    October 31st, 2008

I am away from my craft supplies (and experiencing separation anxiety) while in LA with family. So instead of crafting an elaborate costume, I vowed to spend UNDER FIVE DOLLARS on whatever I made. The result?

RABID MOUSE ATTACK! Careful…he’s a bit foamy.

    Total cost: $2.49
    Materials:
Mouse ($1.00), Fake blood ($1.49), Black Sharpie, Old shirt, Hotel sewing kit, Elmer’s glue, Cotton balls, Nail polish, White paper

HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone! Have a wonderful night.

  • Thrift Horror Week Preview

    October 31st, 2008

Monday starts THRIFT HORROR week here at SheWalksSoftly, where I share some of the worst toys, artifacts and items to be found on thrift store shelves nationwide. Should you have any horrific thrift photos, please submit them!

Lazy-Eyed Dog will be very disappointed if you don’t come back to see the treats.

  • Art of Skulls, Altars and Altered Boxes

    October 31st, 2008

I am really impressed with Art of Skulls Dia de Los Muertos inspired designs.

You can see a variety of her work on Flickr and they are available for purchase on her Etsy site.

I love these little skellies (I feel that’s the best word to describe them) from Altered Boxes:

Her work makes me want to delve in more box/diorama/curio cabinet crafts.

The altars set up for Dia de Los Muertos are often intricate, elaborate works of art themselves:

One day, I WILL attend a traditional celebration of this holiday.

  • Halloween Scraps

    October 31st, 2008

Just a few more bits and pieces to celebrate.

Tribute to one of my classic favorites (wish I had made this):

    Some more pumpkins:

How fitting when spending Halloween in LA:

    French illustrations, 1904:

Meditating zombies is certainly a novel concept. I love it! You’d never peg them for spiritual, introspective types.

Here’s a lovely gallery of (SFW) vintage Halloween pinups. This was an age of glamor, femininity, healthy body shapes, and things left to the imagination.

I much prefer those images over our bony, plastic, chemical filled modern society.

And if anyone loves Vincent Price as much as I do, check out his appearance on The Dating Game.

    Priceless…no pun intended.
