  • Jasper Goodall: Poster Girl

    February 25th, 2009

Jasper Goodall recently exhibited a series entitled Poster Girl, designed as a commentary on fantasy and the fetishistic interpretation of “innocent” materials such as PVC and latex.

    2-pink-polish

The images are stunning amalgams of photography, printed work, vibrant materials and liquid, all blended seamlessly into a vibrant collage.

  • Organ Donors by Foox

    February 25th, 2009

Yet another series of vinyl toys for me to lust after. Foox is putting out this amazing collection of Organ Donors.

Though I can’t spring for the whole set, perhaps I can splurge on just one. Maybe a heart and brain duo?

  • Carpet Confusion

    February 24th, 2009

If I had more open floor space, I would love to play this little rug placement joke on my visitors.

    04_confusion_1a

Is it evidence of a secret room? A rug protruding from another dimension? A compulsion to cover one triangular piece of floor?

    Wouldn’t you like to know?

  • Squirrel Memorial

    February 24th, 2009

I found this a very heartwarming display. How often does one come across a roadside memorial for a squirrel?

    memorial-1

I have such affection and appreciation for tiny creatures (I’m sure some of you have seen me melt at the sight of small animals…or even drawings of small animals). Therefore, it delights me that someone put the effort into commemorating the life of this random rodent.

    R.I.P…Goodnight, sweet prince.

Whether or not you are a fan of the music, this video some stellar shadow puppetry using only human hands. Brilliant editing.

  • Shave the Baby

    February 23rd, 2009

Some of you may never forgive me for this image, but I take my responsibility as a purveyor of oddities seriously. My faithful reader OhTheHumanity (who will get a feature post soon) sent this over.

    save-baby-doll

This item is fundamentally wrong on so many levels, it nearly caused my brain to short circuit.

Would anyone in the universe purchase this for a child? Would that child ever recover? Was it in fact manufactured by sadistic psychotherapists to ensure a pressing need for their services?

Note: if your baby is afflicted with this particularly disturbing pattern of hirsutism, please enlist the help of a doctor immediately.

  • Radiology Art

    February 22nd, 2009

The Radiology Art Project presents visualizations of culturally significant objects such as toys, food and electronics.

Here we have a CT scan of a toy elephant, complete with the “jiggle engine” that causes the animal’s body to vibrate when you pull the tail:

I can imagine this poor fellow is experiencing some bowel discomfort:

Colors in these images correspond with material densities in the object. The McDonald’s fish sandwich is a rich tapestry of varying densities and textures:

I’m a huge fan of Mike Mitchell’s adorable yet maniacal work.

  • Sebastian Brajkovic

    February 21st, 2009

Sebastian Brajkovic created a wonderful furniture series called Lathe, comprised of furniture pieces that appear to have been stretched or extruded.

“This extruding idea came from a Photoshop function where you can pick a row of pixels and extend them as long as you want,” explains Brajkovic.

It’s lovely to see classic Victorian styling and modern graphic design merged in a physical object.

  • Tabitha Vevers: Lover’s Eye Series

    February 21st, 2009

As an “eye person,” I love Tabitha Vevers’ Lover’s Eye Series.

    eye_src_01

    From the artist site:

This work plays on the convention of eye portraiture begun in the late 18th century during the Georgian period. Such paintings were often painted on ivory and commissioned as secret gifts for illicit lovers. I have excerpted images of women’s eyes from well-known paintings such as Manet’s Olympia and Ingres’ Odalisque as a way of celebrating the private lives to the artists’ models. The paintings give primacy to the gaze of the model looking out, rather than the male gaze of the original artist’s eye.

I used to have an eye by Mark Ryden on my wall, framed in a similar fashion. If it would not terrify my guests, I’d probably make a series like the one below with selections of Ryden’s fantastic eyes.

You can see more of Tabitha’s work here.
