The wonderful Terra Incognita drew my attention to Russian photo artist Ann Mei.
Her ethereal worlds often involve strange apparatuses of questionable purpose. Tiny animals, string…perhaps not meant to tell a cohesive story.
Only the subject knows the truth behind the design.
Then there are the surreal scenes that beautifully defy form and function.
And one that reminds me of my mischievous childhood imagination:

Did you know there’s a subgenre of Christian puppetry records? Believe it.
The puppet prerequisites? Awkward, malformed or otherwise terrifying.
We also find the occasional doll on these covers. Here, the doll is clearly fed up with this child’s incessant praying.
Almost forgot one! There is indeed a puppet here, but the menacing mascots caused me to overlook him entirely.

Following the outbreak of the Japan-China war in 1937, the Japanese Red Cross worked with government officials on a series of posters to educate the public about potential air raid defense.
Designed to create a pattern of “anti-aircraft defense” thought, these were displayed as part of a military exhibition in the Red Cross Museum.
New laws following the outbreak of war required citizens to take protective measures against gas attacks. The poster series covers the basics of evacuation and rescue, disinfection, gas identification, symptoms of poisoning, treatment and relief.

I’m a huge fan of using collections in unconventional ways. One useless object? Possibly useless, indeed. Hundreds of the same useless object? MATERIAL!
I think this Key Tree that appeared outside of the Los Angeles Lucent L’amour festival last month is an eye-catching little treat.
I suppose I have a weakness for twirling, winding metal…
And I now feel oddly justified for keeping useless collections of objects, with artistic intent.
Hmmm…my library definitely needs some Fossil Stone Furniture.
What a great combination of majesty and decay. Too bad the prices are only available upon request (usually a sure indicator that it’s out of this little lady’s current budget).
The Shoebox Blog recently launched a series of 165 Bots With Stuff.
I really enjoy the random yet simple nature of these bots. They’ve got personality!
They are the work of comic book creator Chris Grine.

Perhaps most people would opt to do artwork of this style digitally these days, but The Dirty Fabulous paints them by hand with acrylic on watercolor paper.
From the artist site: Philosophy, psychology, dreams, fears, human folly, eroticism, consumer culture, medieval manuscripts -all are brought in on these works.
I love how these images pop with color, and remind me of mixed media image collages.
