  • Tar Cover: April 2009

    April 4th, 2009

Tar magazine editor Evanly Schindler set out to “explore the intersection of art and fashion from a perspective that is both intellectually pointed and socially conscious but still stylishly produced.”

Damien Hirst designed the cover for April’s issue of Tar magazine; a somewhat de-fleshed Kate Moss, brandishing the sweet curvature of muscle tissue.

    02row1-190

From the New York Times article:

It is not the idealized cover image you might expect would help to sell a magazine, though the distortion is really not that different from the extreme retouching that routinely goes on at mainstream publications to make celebrities look “better,” only to make them look like aliens.

I am very curious to browse this magazine and see how they achieve the intended expressive balance.

  • Culinary Compendium

    April 3rd, 2009

Trader Joe’s has uploaded the only grocery flyer I’ve ever seen that features a bespectacled cephalopod on the cover, and contains pages that evoke turn of the century print materials.

  • Wall Decal Roundup

    April 3rd, 2009

As I’ve mentioned before, I collect too many things to have adequate wall space. But here are a few decals for the discriminating artsy geek.

I like these portholes by Winston Graphics:
    il_430xn59572418

    il_430xn59972819

    il_430xn59972786

Or, you can add a dash of paranoia to any room or appliance with these Scared Eyes:
    il_430xn63629970

For an even more “Big Brother” feeling, you can use a Bar Code:
    il_430xn63847045

These gears would go nicely in a workshop:
    il_430xn58887254

The irony of the next two is that they would be great in a child’s room, yet the children of today do not know the majesty of the original Atari and Nintendo systems.

    Space Invaders:

    Mario Bros:

And of course…My favorite not-so-subtle hint:

  • Insane Musical Scores

    April 2nd, 2009

As long as I’m discussing sound waves today, I might as well share some truly bizarre musical scores.

Faerie’s Aire And Death Waltz (from “A Tribute To Zdenko G. Fibich”) composed by John Stum:
    406258694_e65219a08c_o
I’m particularly fond of the performance instructions peppered throughout: Have a nice day…Add bicycle…Gradually become agitated…RELEASE THE PENGUINS…

Then we have String Quartet No. 556(b) for Strings In A Minor (Motoring Accident):
    406258142_b7c5d0c2f0_o
This one contains similarly entertaining directions: Players may not fly above the audience during performance…Shock therapy may be necessary to finish…With much passionfruit…

There are also such pearls of wisdom as “If arms fall off, re-attach and play much slower” and “Re-coat all of the pinatas with marmalade until most of the ox drivers have discovered the tube of antimatter won’t fit into some Barbie dolls.”

I must say, I’d be slightly frightened to step into this man’s brain.

Then we have Sylvano Bussotti’s Mobile-Stabile per Chitarre, Canto e Piano, which resembles something between a score and a mechanical blueprint.

I’m not entirely sure whether Play II for Harpsichord and Synthesizer, by John Stead is a musical score or biology textbook image:

This one would make a great poster:

  • Sound Wave Bracelets

    April 2nd, 2009

The Sound Advice Project is to designed to help parents talk to their children about drugs. They take a recorded statement and reproduce the exact form the of the sound waves in a bracelet design.

    wavelengthjewelry1

Personally, I think this would make a phenomenal gift for a good friend, or even better…a token of geek romance. What could be more romantic than wearing a rendition of the wavelength, frequency and amplitude of your sweetheart’s voice?

Pardon me while I stare into space and daydream about longitudinal waves…

  • SheWalksSoftly Coloring Contest Winners

    April 1st, 2009

Here are the wonderful winners of last month’s coloring contest.

    WINNER:
    sws-contest-winner1
This trip-tastic collage by Skywalker contains so many of my favorite things: vintage illustration, anatomy, chocolate, sideshow freaks, colorful insects…I love it!

Please go check out Skywalker’s blog, Terra Incognita. It’s always a wonderful collection of eye and brain candy.

    Honorable Mentions:
Jason, you have officially colored the hell out of a bike! 🙂 Check out those movement lines! You can almost hear the whooooosh…

Thanks, Megan! Very nice job, especially with shading. This could be a professional illustration in a children’s book about mind-body medicine (if only those existed!).

  • Cake on a Stick

    March 31st, 2009

Yes, yes, YES! Not nearly enough of my favorite foods are available on sticks.

Now, BEHOLD! The Norpro Nonstick Cake-Sicle Pan!

    51hmw6t2x0l_ss500_

I honestly can’t properly express the joy this thing engenders in me. I’ve been exclaiming Cake on a stick! in my head repeatedly. Such possibilities!

    cakesicle

I want cake on a stick. I want to make cake on a stick for all of my friends.

There is also a heart shaped version (though personally, I am a fan of the traditional popsicle shape):

This blog is now accepting donations in the form of Cake-Sicle pans.

  • Alexander Jansson

    March 31st, 2009

Swedish artist Alexander Jansson paints lovely mysterious worlds. Tiny dwellings stacked in unlikely places, giant animals, chimeras…

Browsing his site can feel like wandering through a dark carnival, or a dream state filled with beautiful (sometimes apocalyptic) journeys.

I highly recommend perusing his site.

  • Pork Chop Piggy Bank

    March 30th, 2009

Most of us have a mental image of the culturally archetypal piggy bank.

    piggy-bank

The Swiss Miss has debuted a delightful variation: The Pork Chop Piggy Bank.

    porkjpg-480x480

Like an anatomical cross section of your favorite childhood coin storage piece.

Side note: it has occurred to me that I I’ve neglected to use a “meat” tag on my entries. For a blog containing as much meat as this one, it must be remedied.

  • Get Excited and Make Things

    March 30th, 2009

I want to frame this in every room of my house…not that I need a reminder.

The laser cut notebook version is amazing:
    3397690785_090a47b05c

And I’d love to see the logo on a rubber stamp.

Inspired by this 1939 propaganda poster:

You can get a t-shirt too. Creator Matt Jones generously encourages the spreading of this image (but give him proper credit!).
