  • Jon Anderson: Fimo Animals

    December 6th, 2015

Did anyone make little Fimo beads or sculptures as a kid? I went through a bead making phase in the 90’s when Fimo jewelry began popping up everywhere (and I still use it for various projects). But I’ve NEVER seen clay work of Jon Anderson’s caliber.

I can only imagine how long it takes to produce such intricate detail. These animals are hypnotic!

  • Walter McDougall

    December 6th, 2015

Thank you, Monster Brains for posting a HUGE collection of Walter McDougall illustrations (click to enlarge).

    22530506458_4d10f7c72c_c

McDougall was a prolific newspaper illustrator in the late 1800’s. His work is sublimely imaginative and bizarre, dancing on the border of surrealist children’s fiction…and nightmares. The captions are brilliant.
    22530429677_30dca2819d_c

I confess, I saved all 86 images in the post because I plan to read them like bedtime stories. Each image is a vignette unto itself, often with a single sentence presenting a strange predicament and/or creature.
    22760755370_e26a5f4d0c_c

Somehow, these fragments coagulate into stories when I see them…hazy at first, but overflowing with possibilities.

  • Dave Correia

    December 4th, 2015

Dave Correia’s gorgeous oil paintings feature a variety of fantastical hybrid creatures. I love the way he uses color, employing traditionally “pretty” color palettes to depict bizarre (and at times uncomfortable) subject matter.

    MotherNature

    From the artist bio:
Fascinated by comic books, horror films, and video games as a child, the subjects of Dave’s earliest artistic endeavors were often strange, demonic creatures.

    dc1

Disturbing, yet grotesquely appealing, these characters and their fictional worlds fueled his imagination and had a strong, significant influence on Dave’s creative style today.

  • Go Monster Project

    December 2nd, 2015

I’ve posted about independent crafters who recreate child artwork in plush toys or high quality visual art, but I can never resist an opportunity to support a new iteration of this endeavor.

Go Monster Project includes artists from all over the world who recreate the artwork of children in their own styles.

    Go-monster-project-design-2_565x352

You’ll find two and three dimensional tributes to the engaging imaginations of these lucky kids. I got a tiny bit choked up while reading the FAQs, because I wholeheartedly support the mission statement of this project.

  • Otto Lehtonen

    December 1st, 2015

Since we’re now getting inundated with holiday cheer at every turn, I thought I’d provide some balance via Otto Lehtonen (aka Eemeling).

Love his version of The Babadook:

You will find many tortured, twisted, grinning and otherwise menacing figures in his portfolio.

Fans of horror art will undoubtedly enjoy these undead creations.

Ian Anderson paints fine art pieces that highlight oppositional environmental forces.

We see the struggle and contrast within nature, of ideology and technology, in depicted in striking detail.

  • Can I Live?

    November 29th, 2015

Although deceptively simple, this is actually a brilliant shirt with a range of interpretations as vast as the imagination itself.

    il_570xN.838501539_neog

Is it a sarcastic quip you utter when a stranger is crowding you on the subway? A sincere supplication? I must confess, the impish little trickster in me who delights in somewhat inappropriate humor wants to wear this to my next medical treatment (as I’ve found myself asking this question in earnest many times). The possibilities are endless!

Thank you Shivers of Delight for pointing me to this stop motion animation Kickstarter by Screen Novelties.

    54eb44ff3650e4874d28dd543ca86a8b_original

    I love the concept:
Welcome to a magical realm of dense jungles, fiery volcanoes, and iridescent lagoons. Meet the WITCHDOCTOR, the overzealous protector of this mysterious archipelago. He’s ready for action with his shiny cauldron, potent elixirs, and shrunken heads. There’s only one problem… The Witchdoctor STINKS at magic. When he mixes a potion or casts a spell, watch out!

    a54a2037f83eeceb7e505bc7c9624e1c_original

The film will use hand built props, sets, puppets, special effects and black-light to bring their classic Tiki influences (they also site George Pal, Karel Zeman, Rankin/Bass, Jim Henson, Lotte Reiniger, and Ray Harryhausen as influences…YES PLEASE!) to life in a creative, modern fashion. I can’t wait to see this!

  • Happy Thanksgiving

    November 26th, 2015

To my American readers…the Fiery Satanic Turkey of Death Cake wishes you happy Thanksgiving.

For those outside the US, here’s a cake that was supposed to be Thanksgiving themed…but I can’t, for the life of me, figure out what it’s supposed to be. This abomination transcends cultural boundaries. Any guesses?
