  • Remaking Retro Games

    May 10th, 2009

Those of us who grew up with classic gaming systems played them on TVs with phosphorescent tubing. CRT displays had their own unique texture, afterimage, color bleed and noise, all of which are lost in modern emulations of classic favorites.

    6a00d83452989a69e201156f6dc4c2970c-800wi

Admit it, fellow children of the 80’s: there is something soul-less and wrong about high definition Atari, with its crystal clarity and precise lines.

Thus Dr. Ian Bogost, an Associate Professor at Georgia Tech, asked a group of CS seniors to simulate a number of CRT behaviors using an Atari VCS emulator. The results were splendidly realistic.

“[The students] are currently working with the maintainer of the free, open-source Stella emulator to patch their changes into the main build, where the effects will be available as a configurable option. Expect to see it there shortly, where hopefully it will benefit players, creators, educators, and archivists alike.” –Source

  • Leafy Sea Dragons

    May 9th, 2009

How could anyone wonder what I’m so fascinated by sea life when creatures like this exist?

    251364605_24fbd888b5

Leafy Sea Dragons are close relatives of seahorses. The leaf-like protrusions that spring from their bodies allow perfect camouflage amidst surrounding seaweed.

    294291636_c9a6d864fe

I’m always impressed by nature’s masters of adaptation. For a slow moving creature, fragile enough to rupture from mere changes in water pressure, flawless camouflage was the least evolution could do for this gorgeous specimen.

    3003007592_4f2a1d94d4

The body of a sea dragon scarcely appears to move at all. Steering and turning is through movement of tiny, translucent fins along the sides of the head (pectoral fins, visible above) and propulsion derives from the dorsal fins (along the spine). Their movement is as though an invisible hand were helping, causing them to glide and tumble in peculiar but graceful patterns in slow-motion. This movement appears to mimic the swaying movements of the seaweed and kelp. Only close observation reveals movement of an eye or tiny fins. –Source

  • Wim Delvoye

    May 9th, 2009

Wim Delvoye’s “Marble Floor” series is not actually edible despite its meaty appearance.

    rescale.php

I’d almost be afraid to walk on it, as if my shoes would slip on grease and tear into the delicate slices that make up the design.

I commend him on the intricate, painstaking work that went into tiling these pieces.

Suddenly I find myself craving all sorts of salted, cured meats.

  • The Reign of Buttercup Sprinkles

    May 8th, 2009

This is one of the best parody trailers I’ve seen in ages. Don’t skip over this video! It’s a MY LITTLE PONY INVASION!

Their armies shall arrive in a variety of colors…

  • Romaine Jerome: Moon Watch

    May 8th, 2009

I’m not one for outlandishly expensive jewelry, but I must admit that Romaine Jerome’s latest watch creation is pretty incredible.

    moon-watch_kXCli_48

This piece is part of the Moon Dust-DNA collection, which includes watches made from moon dust (obviously), parts of the Apollo 11 rocket and bits of spacesuits.

It’s like wearing a mini museum on your wrist! Though the price range is $15,000-$500,000…so I’m afraid I’ll be sticking to the price of regular museum admissions.

  • Retro Monster Cards

    May 7th, 2009

Monster Brains recently featured a killer set of retro monsters.

    ejie06

I love how some are bastardizations of strange wildlife (not that the Star Nosed Mole needs much alteration to be terrifying).

This brainy spider-scorpion looks quite happy.

Maybe it’s just me, but this three headed dinosaur appears to be flashing us.

Some of them look forlorn and tortured…

  • You Will Obey the Kitty

    May 7th, 2009

Hello Kitty has been splashed over countless products, manufactured in every possible form, and turned into some serious atrocities.

But I’d like to simply post this image by Ippei Gyoubu:

    ippeigyobu7pic

As a fan of post-apocalyptic, dystopian literature, I couldn’t help but love seeing Hello Kitty in this Orwellian nightmare. It’s a New World Order of whiskers and red bows.

    Be very afraid.

  • Gotta Have Heart

    May 7th, 2009

Since I can’t have the DNA patterned carpeting that recently impressed me at the NY Academy of Sciences, I’ll simply lust after one of these posters.

    heart_tan

One irritating thing about ravenously devouring art while never having been formally schooled in the subject is that I’m not aware of the proper terminology for various styles. I’m sure this style has a name. I don’t know it.

    heart_red

I hope they make a brain poster next!

  • The Grasping Hand

    May 6th, 2009

Context is everything. Although this short clip simply a raccoon grasping at some treats, it could easily double as horror movie footage in my opinion.

There’s something very…People Under the Stairs about it.

  • Montanara Couch

    May 5th, 2009

I really love something about this unlikely choice for a sofa design, by Gaetano Pesce.

    mountain-couch

This may be the closest a delicate lady like me ever gets to scaling high mountains. Look at that rocky terrain, those dangerous peaks and valleys…and perfect placement of waterfalls.

    mountain-couch2

    mountain-couch4

It’s definitely worth looking through the rest of Gaetano Pesce’s site. Surreal and bizarre creations abound.
