  • Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev

    May 14th, 2009

There is much to browse through in Vladimir Clavijo-Telepnev’s portfolio, but I’m particularly fond of his sepia toned Alice in Wonderland inspired images.

    0_68ae_c8540bea_L

A strange, intriguing blend of life and inanimate objects…these photos remind me very much of the little wonderlands I used to create for myself as a child.

If you like vintage style sepia and gray scale photography, peruse his other work.

  • San-X Relax Bear

    May 14th, 2009

It takes so little to entertain me. Does anyone else find it odd that the San-X Rilakkuma 5th Anniversary “Relax Bear” is carrying a head on a platter?

    MK-55804-2

I’m sure the little victim, who seems to gaze up at the monarch imploringly, didn’t find the experience of ending up there too “relaxing.”

You can purchase one from Shop Kawaii if you’re interested.

  • Eugenio Recuenco

    May 13th, 2009

I could spend the better part of a day on Eugenio Recuenco’s site. He has one of the most diverse and extensive photography portfolios I’ve seen.

    901

    Portraiture is intense and surreal…

There are sets in which he masterfully emulates the ephemera of bygone days in distant places.

Sometimes the atmosphere just blows me away…

The scope of Recuenco’s talent is too grand for me to choose representative examples. I encourage you to see what treasures await here.

  • The Hypothalamus Song

    May 13th, 2009

Metal and the Hypothalamus gland…two of my favorite things! I’m overjoyed that someone made this (and grateful for the subtitles!):

The Hypothalamus is so underappreciated. I’m glad someone paid tribute.

    Found here.

  • Puppet Kafka

    May 12th, 2009

According to the New York Times:

There are people who love puppets, there are people who love Kafka, and there is almost certainly a subset of people who love both puppets and Kafka. Their moment has arrived.

I am a card-carrying member of that subset, but sadly…the moment has passed. The one day I could have gone to see Puppet Kafka, it was sold out.

    Kafka_morning_2

I would have loved to see one of my favorite authors animated in creepy marionettes (apparently it was a combination of the Metamorphosis and the Trial).

Must make a point to keep current with surrealist puppet theater.

  • Stefan Strumbler

    May 12th, 2009

Stefan Strumbler injects a healthy dose of graffiti inspired street art into traditional German cuckoo clocks.

    Unknown-1

I really adore the way he blends the standard cuckoo clock fare (antlers, woodland creatures…) with edgy pop art style. And look at those shadows…

    what's heimat

A recurring theme is the distinctly German concept of Heimat, which has no direct translation. For some people, it’s a place…for others, a feeling.

I must stop looking at these before I go on clock re-fabrication kick and start grazing for alterable time pieces in local thrift shops.

    See Strumbler’s blog here.

  • “Orgy of the Senses”

Hats off to global electric company Blusens for using this brilliant literalism in an ad:

  • Mystic Seer and Invader

    May 11th, 2009

Remember the classic Twilight Zone episode Nick of Time, in which William Shatner becomes obsessed with a table top penny fortune teller called the Mystic Seer?

    zonenicktime

Well, now there is a prototype for a Mystic Seer bobble head!

    _autoimages_bbp05004lg

It looks like they are making it in black and white. There’s something intriguing about a single object creating a observational time warp.

It seems there used to be a Mystic Seer Kit:

    The finished product:

There is also an Invader prototype:

You’ll remember this fellow as the one who battled the giant woman in The Invaders.

These are actually reasonably priced enough for me to get (only $13). Going on the wish list…

  • Mother’s Day

    May 10th, 2009

Since this is the first Mother’s Day since my mom passed away, it seems fitting to pay tribute to the wonderful woman who helped make me who I am and still inspires me every day.

    saintbarbie

If you like this blog, you partially have her to thank. She surrounded me with creativity and imagination from my youngest days, supported my every project and crazy scheme. She was a gifted artist and fiercely loving human being. From her I learned to bestow kindness upon strangers and shower my loved ones with (quirky) displays of affection. I learned to create without limits, and fearlessly forge paths where none existed.

Mom, thanks for thinking outside of the box with me, and for fitting a lifetime of love into a life cut short. I carry the magic of your incredible spirit in my heart always.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL THE MOM’S OUT THERE!

  • Alexis Anne

    May 10th, 2009

Alexis Anne’s collages of ephemera are fantastical journeys for the eye.

    Image-5624-37560-excursion

Her designs are a beautiful combination of vintage print material and modern surrealism.

    Image-5624-791377-caution

The style lends itself wonderfully to little scenarios isolated outside of space and time.
