  • George Vlosich

    June 29th, 2009

Remember Etch A Sketch? Not once did I produce a design on an Etch A Sketch that remotely resembled…anything. Most peoples’ doodling comes out something like this:

    etch-a-sketch

    And then there’s George Vlosich.

    a96732_e1

How he can possibly maneuver those two little knobs to create images of this calibur (without accidentally banging or shaking the Etch A Sketch, thereby erasing his hard work) is beyond me.

    a96732_e5

Vlosich has done a variety of pop art pieces, usually focusing on celebrities or sport figures. Each one takes 70-80 hours to complete.

  • Atlas Obscura and The Geek Atlas

    June 29th, 2009

Between the recent debut of Atlas Obscura and The Geek Atlas, I’m itching to make some vacation plans.

Atlas Obscura is one of those sites I feel was designed specifically for people like me. I’ve already posted about a number of the attractions listed, and I look forward to the additions of fellow explorers.

    22_atlas-obscura-logo

Atlas Obscura is a collaborative project with the goal of cataloging all of the singular, eccentric, bizarre, fantastical, and strange out-of-the-way places that get left out of traditional travel guidebooks and are ignored by the average tourist. If you’re looking for miniature cities, glass flowers, books bound in human skin, gigantic flaming holes in the ground, phallological museums, bone churches, balancing pagodas, or homes built entirely out of paper, the Atlas Obscura is where you’ll find them.

I also stumbled upon The Geek Atlas, which I must get my hands on. Nearly 550 pages of locations where science and technology made history (or are currently making it).

This book includes a general introduction to each destination’s significance, a related technical subject covered in more detail, and practical visiting information. Perfect!

  • Blinking Doll Eye Rings

    June 28th, 2009

This is certain not a piece for everyone, but Ginga Squid makes a vintage doll eye ring that actually blinks when you move your hand.

You can really tell the eye is a vintage construction, and it goes wonderfully with the rest of the materials. A nice conversation piece, for sure.

  • Michel Henricot

    June 27th, 2009

I can’t find as much information as I’d like on Michel Henricot, so I’ll just marvel at a few of his paintings for a while.

    Voyageur IV, 1995 1a

Henricot has a talent for musculature and anatomy, veiled by translucent skin and hazy lighting. This is not the stark work of textbooks. Nor is it merely the fantastical work of a gifted surrealist.

    H25 1ac

His work dances between the technical and the mystical until vastly divergent styles can no longer be separated. Henricot’s imagination is endowed with precision of form and function.

Here is a decent size gallery. So lovely…

  • Neuro Images

    June 27th, 2009

This site appears to be new, and I’m very excited about what they are going to dig up. Neuro Images collects depictions of the brain from historical anatomy sketches to modern day print ads (and everything in between). Here are just a few:

And we can’t forget the world of advertising…

    Here you go, fellow neuromaniacs.

  • Mark Mawson: Aqueous

    June 26th, 2009

Photographer Mark Mawson has a phenomenal series of images called Aqueous, created by dropping paint into water.

The colors swirl, blend and come to life…as if one were viewing deep sea creatures in motion.

  • O-No Sad Sushi

    June 26th, 2009

So many novelty items involve sushi. There are pillows, pencil toppers, fabric prints…all of which pay a well-designed, pristine tribute to the delicacy.

However, since I cannot get myself to eat sushi no matter how many hipsters would deride me for it, I was happy to see the O-No Sad Sushi.

Look at him folks. Look at his sad, pleading glance. He knows his fate.

This adorable little fellow comes with interchangeable eyes, so you can be sure when you’ve really hacked the last bits of life out of him.

Even the packaging is pretty great.

  • Colour Lover’s Space Photographs

    June 25th, 2009

I could look at space photography all day. I haven’t studied astronomy in quite as much depth as my other geeky fascinations, but cosmic eye candy is one of my favorite things.

Colour Lovers recently posted a delicious series of photos.

It’s hard to believe that these images are even real, and these phenomena actually exist in nature at this very moment.

  • Precious Pink Gundam

    June 25th, 2009

My source for this image strip is entirely in Japanese, so I have no background info. It appears that a crafty fan has constructed a fancy, bejeweled Gundam. This type of project lends itself to all kinds of commentary, but I’ll refrain and let you all draw your own conclusions. I, for one, am impressed. As a lover of contradiction, I feel pretty comfortable with florid, lacy robots.

  • Tim Burton’s Alice

    June 23rd, 2009

I’m reluctant to post this due to all the buzz it’s been getting on the rest of the web, but I’m curious about any comments readers may have. Tim Burton recently released a series of stills from his upcoming incarnation of Alice in Wonderland, set for release in March of next year.

Like many directors, Burton has established a series of “regulars” who now appear in most of his productions. Chief among them: Johnny Depp (who will play the Madd Hatter):
    45433272_deppwonderland

Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen:
    45433283_helenawonderland

Anne Hathaway as the White Queen:
    45433347_annewonderland

    And a couple of stills:
    3653541769_e18aab8960_o

    3653541849_72483f1c9a_o

Tim Burton’s aesthetic sense has always been outrageously appealing to me, though I admit to being disappointed by other elements of his recent work. What do you guys think? Are you waiting with bated breath for this movie? Feel free to make completely biased and premature judgment calls.
