  • How to Make Men Like You

    September 1st, 2009

Ah, mid 20th century popularity tips. I love looking at old (and even current) advice trends. This piece offers some lofty promises.

    xlg_make_men_like_you_0

    Read the text here.

Sure, we can scoff at antiquated notions of shut up, look pretty and praise every word your man says with wide-eyed wonder.

But are the current tips in Cosmo really so much better? (Actual Cosmo quote: “We noticed in December…how baseball player Alex Rodriguez shamelessly followed Madonna around like a little poodle…Clearly, as Madonna proves, being ballsy and comfortable with oneself is a big turn-on.”)

This little blogger thinks there must be a more appropriate middle ground between doormat and ball-breaker. I should keep a Cosmo or two (despite the fact that I don’t read them…I can find trite advice and compare myself unfavorably to other women at home for free). They are bound to be the collectible kitsch of the future.

  • D. Rad Bacteria

    August 31st, 2009

It sounds like a nickname doesn’t it? “Hey…D-Rad!”

But it’s actually an abbreviation for Deinococcus Radiodurans, a surprisingly resilient organism, dubbed Conan the Bacterium.

    drad_daly

    In brief:
    D. Rad survive extreme levels of radiation, extreme temperatures, dehydration, and exposure to genotoxic chemicals. Amazingly, they even have the ability to repair their own DNA, usually within 48 hours. Known as an extremophile, bacteria such as D. rad are of interest to NASA partly because they might be adaptable to help human astronauts survive on other worlds. A recent map of D. rad’s DNA might allow biologists to augment their survival skills with the ability to produce medicine, clean water, and oxygen. Already they have been genetically engineered to help clean up spills of toxic mercury. Likely one of the oldest surviving life forms, D. rad was discovered by accident in the 1950s when scientists investigating food preservation techniques could not easily kill it.

This bacteria could wipe the floor with any of us.

Find more than you ever needed to know about D. Rad here.

  • Luminous Lint Skulls

    August 30th, 2009

Every now and then I pop back on Luminous Lint to browse their fantastic photography exhibitions. Here are a few selections from the skull collection.

    12164_std

Some are actual medical images, quite disturbing (such as this 1966 Vietnam War X-ray of a grenade implanted in a man’s forehead):

    Some are art photography…

  • Too Many Zombies

    August 28th, 2009

    Ah, sweet undead simplicity.

    Zom26a

The Too Many Zombies blog posts one little zombie a day, along with a name and brief bio/obituary.

    Zom17

The artist crams a lot of charisma into these little guys.

    Zom18a

As I go through my reader, it’s great to have the science articles and more “serious” art posts peppered with adorable drawings like these.

    Zom21b

    Very fun to follow.

  • Little Big Love

    August 28th, 2009

This is a fantastic stop-motion short film about a robot who falls in love with an electric kettle. There’s been much “humanization” of robots in the media lately, and I have to admit I find it rather moving.

Warning: not all love stories end happily.

  • Shain Erin

    August 27th, 2009

It’s still August, and I’ve been overtaken by a wave of serious Halloween excitement (amplified by project brainstorming with a fellow Halloween enthusiast).

The always wonderful Creepy Cupcakes directed to the work of Shain Erin.

    annabelleefront

His dolls are wonderfully crafted undead; zombies, mummies, skeletons.

    And a few “living” freaks.

  • Found Polaroids

    August 27th, 2009

My aesthetically kindred friend Chris just collected a series of fantastic “found photo” polaroids on her facebook page. I love the washed out color, and the visible finger prints on some of them.

So much beauty in the emptiness…

Then there are the slices of life, captured in a moment, anonymous yet somehow deeply personal…

I’m not sure if the album is public, but you can see more photos here.

  • Pixelated Colour Chart Bag

    August 26th, 2009

I’m usually not one to embrace bright colors in my attire or accessories (except in small splashes, here and there) but this Colour Chart Bag by Cristian Zuzunaga is a nice concept:

    P42459-6861_4

It would make a great gift for a graphic designer. If there were one in grayscale, I’d definitely consider buying one.

  • Toothpaste Squeezing Toothbrush

    August 25th, 2009

I’ve already referenced my personal habit of squeezing the toothpaste tube from the middle (which some of my family members continue to insist is my worst quality).

I’m a prime candidate for this concept design by Jee Young Choi:

    Toothbrush4

    Toothbrush12

    Toothbrush1

Sorry, Dad…it’s still only a concept design. You’ll still have to glance at my mangled toothpaste tubes when I visit!

  • Winkers (patent pending)

    August 24th, 2009

You know those sweatpants with mildly suggestive phrases written across the butt?

    juicy
(Sorry ladies, the basic principles of human brain function make people stare…not the inherent quality of your posterior).

Someone has trumped all previous attempts to draw attention to this region of the body via clothing design.

I have no idea where this video comes from or when it was made, but it’s far too absurd to pass up. Really, you must watch.
