  • Halloween Countdown: Pumpkin Way

    October 26th, 2009

There are some very inspirational carvings over at Pumpkin Way this year.

    pumpkinway.3

I’m not an expert at making jack-o-lanterns. I love when people go the extra mile to give these creations character and personality.

    pumpkinway.9

These folks have a particular talent for making teeth. I’ve been itching to try that technique (scraping off the skin to create the design instead of the simple shape carving I tend to resort to).

  • Mr. Fox

    October 26th, 2009

Something about this video is profoundly disturbing. I found it in a search while wondering about the new Fantastic Mr. Fox movie (specifically, whether they were using pure stop-motion or CGI).

One thing is for sure: THIS one is pure stop-motion. It pulls off the amazing feat of being incredibly creepy without anything gory or horrific. Wait until it gets going a minute or so into the video.

  • Halloween Countdown: Craft Pumpkins

    October 24th, 2009

I just have to pay a quick compliment to My Ghoul Friday’s white craft pumpkins. I’ve never thought of working with white before, and she does a stellar job:

Ms. Ghoul Friday, care to share a picture of them illuminated? 🙂

  • Halloween Countdown: Accessories

    October 24th, 2009

I can only post briefly, since I’m hosting an event at my house later (which I’ll be sure to share in the near future). Here are two not-so-high-quality photos of the accessories I made myself for today.

  • Halloween Countdown: Headless Marie Antoinette

    October 23rd, 2009

I saw this headless Marie Antoinette a while ago on MAKE, but was reminded of it when I decided to do a random search for headless costumes. It takes a lot to make me stop and stare in a creeped out way, but this did it.

    The effect is incredible, no?

You can find the tutorial here.

  • Halloween Countdown: Para Abnormal

    October 22nd, 2009

PARA ABNORMAL is grimly adorable all the time, but the Halloween comics have been great.

    PARAABdloweForgotten

I’ve often thought my jack-o-lanterns might secretly be tortured.
    PARAABdlowePUMPKINwork

Smarties get a bad rap here. They’re not THAT bad. I personally feel it should have been one of those hideous Brach’s hard candies sitting there in place of Smarties (no offense to those who like them, or hand them out…but they were always the massive disappointments of my treat bag). Candy Corns? Yeah, you’re awful.
    PARAABdlowe2monthsaway

Even the comics not strictly intended for Halloween are quite appropriate for the season.

There’s also some style variation. How fantastic is this rural zombie scene?

  • The Kid’s Republic Bookstore

    October 22nd, 2009

For those sick of my Halloween posts, here’s something totally unrelated. The Kid’s Republic Bookstore.

    6

This space was designed by Sako, Japan’s leading architecture firm, for Poplar Picture Bookstore, Japan’s largest children’s book publisher.

    8

I think it’s a phenomenal idea to use space and architecture to appeal to childhood imagination. What better way to have kids form positive associations with books than to make them feel like they’re walking around in a giant game of Chutes and Ladders (do they still make that game, or am I just an old fossil?)?

  • Halloween Countdown: Video Playlists

    October 21st, 2009

I’m coming down with a little something, so I better get some rest today. In the meantime, here are two big playlists of Halloween goodies to keep you occupied!

    Vintage Halloween and Spooky Cartoons

    Enjoy!

  • Halloween Countdown: Vampire Killing Kits

    October 19th, 2009

I must thank my dear friend Skye for reminding me about these. Collector’s Quest has a feature on antique vampire killing kits.

Inside the beautiful Rosewood case with mother of pearl cross inlay there’s an assortment of items to deal with the undead, including a cleaver, prayer book, Holy water vials, looking glass, silver occult dagger, candles, what looks like some wooden stakes, and a pistol with silver bullets in an ornate coffin case.

These items were made to address deep, dark, primal fears. And then, like our fears often are, they were not thrown away but stored in equally dark and out of the way places… Antique wooden killing kits in the attics of old houses, just waiting for the day when the creatures creep from the attics of our minds.

The craftsmanship and detail that went into creating these kits is astonishing. This is luxurious highbrow undead protection. Definitely design inspiration for next year’s Halloween decorations (I’d need a bit more time than I have this year to put together something so lovely).

  • “I Exist” Support Group

    October 19th, 2009

Every now and then a major company launches an ad campaign that appeals to me for reasons other than the advertisers intended. Take Dr Pepper’s “I Exist” support group series, featuring Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and other mythical icons.

    exist

The premise is that diet Dr Pepper is “unbelievably” good.

The following photo is one of my favorite ads of the year:
    ddp1

If I walked past a room with this sign outside, I wouldn’t even BLINK before walking in. Genius.

Perhaps there are times when all of us wish for an “I Exist” support group. I feel like starting one for people to attend on frustrating, lonely days.

If you feel like watching the ad spot, it’s on youtube.

(Of course this post is for my favorite Dr Pepper fan)
