  • The Scarecrow’s Post: Masks

    November 16th, 2009

Surprisingly, I’m not impressed by most horror masks (at least the ones I typically see in stores). But The Scarecrow’s Post has a truly noteworthy collection.

He seems to have found the pick of the litter in the world of scarecrow and pumpkin masks.

  • Tim Burton MOMA Promo

    November 14th, 2009

I’m pretty excited about Tim Burton’s upcoming MOMA exhibit (I love his aesthetic sensibilities). The museum has released a new promo video:

The exhibit begins November 22nd and runs through April 26th.

    Anyone else plan on going?

  • Audrey Flack

    November 14th, 2009

Audrey Flack’s work makes me feel like my eyeballs have just had an invigorating massage. Let’s start with some of her gorgeous still life dye transfer photographs (this is definitely a technique I have to explore further due to its incredible richness and depth).

Perhaps I love her work because she uses the kind of subject matter that clutters the surfaces of my own home. These are very reminiscent of my own collections…

She also does photo-realistic painting. I want to either eat or play with everything she paints…

    Mmmm…shiny things…

Last but not least, we have sculpture.

  • Tom Deininger

    November 14th, 2009

Tom Deininger’s art and sculptures made from “recycled” items are impressive. Take for example, this bunny made of unraveled cigarette filters:

    And another cigarette creation:

Here is an American flag, constructed of kitschy found objects. Cultural commentary, perhaps?

    Found object color fade:

And one of my very favorites, where “a light box was built to illuminate a butterfly made from chainstore plastic bags. Sale stickers were used to block out light and caution tape to create a background.”

  • The Art of the Failed Apocalypse

    November 13th, 2009

Doomsday is all the rage these days. Ronnie pointed me to a wonderful rundown of failed doomsday prophecies on National Geographic.

It’s actually quite entertaining to see the various ways in which we have plotted our collective demise.

  • The Monopoly Movie

    November 12th, 2009

Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to post this image because it pretty much made my morning:

  • Hold Your Light, Eleven…

    November 11th, 2009

11 is my favorite number. I’ve always been drawn to it and enjoyed the symbolism despite the fact that I’m not a numerology buff.

    231743-47524-42

Symbolically, 11 is a “master number;” two objects coming together to double in power. It stands for the synergy of opposites: male and female energy, darkness and light, work and play, thought and feeling. In my opinion, this balance is one of the most valuable things a human being can find or cultivate.

11 represents perspective and individuality in the midst of perfect harmony…two entities standing alone, but strengthened together.

Is it any wonder that years ago I envisioned 11/11/11 as the perfect wedding day? I still swoon just looking at the date because it’s so…symmetrical. Like a design or code. Of course, the aesthetic and symbolic qualities of a wedding date are hardly as important as, say, an actual groom.

No matter what, I will host an amazing 11/11/11 party as a celebration of all synergistic relationships we are lucky enough to have.

Now before you go thinking I’m just a sentimental fool, I’m certainly not alone. Much has been made of the 11:11 wish concept.

    avec

I’ve seen many cards on Postsecret referring to it.

  • Thanksgiving Remix Countdown

    November 10th, 2009

My partner in culinary crime gave me a fantastic idea the other day: Thanksgiving Recipe Remix Countdown. I’m rather unnerved by the true politics behind this holiday, so let’s focus on two things I stand behind 100%…good food and gratitude.

    42-20040180

I’d like to make/post some unconventional recipes that involve traditional Thanksgiving dinner ingredients (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, squash, etc.).

So this is my open call for recipe submissions. Please send me your favorite interesting autumn comfort food ideas, and let’s get this thing started.

I haven’t decided exactly how to honor the participants in this little project yet, but I promise it’ll be fun. So send away!

  • The Runny Bunny

    November 10th, 2009

I’m digging the sculptures on The Runny Bunny’s Etsy site.

    il_430xN.101296438

Made to order from slip cast molds, these customizable chimeras are sure to catch the eye of your visitors (and most likely evoke a slightly bewildered expression).

Ever since I posted about the Victorian TV Heads, I’ve had the odd urge to cobble together mismatched creatures. Unfortunately, my favorite supply source for vintage tchotchkes to use for such purposes just shut down with very little advanced notice (RIP, Northern Thrift).

  • Thomas Kuntz: Self-Portrait

    November 10th, 2009

This automaton self-portrait by Thomas Kuntz, hand crafted from brass, steel and wood is a creepy masterpiece. Watch his head get severed and resurrected in this autobiographical cult allegory, Automaton: Death + Resurrection: In the Chamber of Reflection.
