  • The AbeBooks Weird Book Room

    January 10th, 2010

Boy, did I have a great time searching this page. AbeBooks has created a Weird Book Room on their site, featuring numerous bizarre titles.

I think this is the only (near) vomit action shot I’ve seen on a book cover:

If I had a dime for every time I heard THIS complaint…

    Talk about a narrow niche…

    Here you go, Brian:

Forget health, happiness, world peace…there are more important uses for mental power.

    See the rest here.
    Found on Neatorama.

  • The Hand Collector

    January 8th, 2010

The Hand Collector began in 2005, and has since collected many drawings, photographs and art pieces involving the human hand. The creator of the collection draws attention to the hand, not simply as a vehicle for creating art, but as an intriguing artistic subject.

I’ve always found the hand to be a fascinating subject. Hands tell incredible stories.

I haven’t included them here, but there are many wonderful doodles on palms as well.

    See the galleries here.

  • Santa Protects Russia in 1945

    January 8th, 2010

I could wait another 11 months for the Christmas season to roll around again and post this, or just admit that I came upon this series of cards a little late.

Here were have the politicization of Yuletide’s beloved figurehead. Santa is rarely pictured with a machine gun nowadays. I love these ephemeral renditions of an otherwise unchanging legend.

Of course, we also have the delightfully retro-futuristic Russian Space Santa.

  • DIY Lantern Inspiration

    January 8th, 2010

A few years ago I vowed to have an fantastic 11/11/11 celebration. I saved a piece of paper with a stunning display at the now defunct Tavern on the Green in NYC, because it seemed the ideal place to host such a thing.

I could get lost in those photos. Something about them is absolutely magical, like stepping into another world.

But since Ronnie informed me that 12/31/09 was Tavern on the Green’s final night, I will have to find a new location. The other day I came across this photo which made me feel a bit better about the challenge. I would actually love to replicate a scene like this in my back yard, and I think it’s entirely possible.

11/11/11 is saved! Or at least now carries with it a new possibility.

  • Suicidal Snowman

    January 7th, 2010

Funny how I just mentioned the hair dryer as a source of vulnerability for the so-called “Invincible Snowman.” Turns out my buddy Lee made a snowman, “Wheezy Joe,” who chose this method to end his own frosty life.

Man, he shot himself point blank with that dryer…

    Is that…blue blood?

Ah, Lee…always the bringer of controversy. But we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • Limited Edition Star Trek Waffles

    January 5th, 2010

This one is for my dad, and the other Star Trek fans I know.

Kellogg’s has surprised fans with waffles that have edible images on them of Star Trek characters, planets, logos, phrases, and technology. There are more than 25 different waffles available with this limited edition item.

Naturally, they came out in conjunction with 2009’s Star Trek movie (wouldn’t it be wonderful if vintage movies were randomly selected for artistically rendered waffles, without a remake to market?).

I like the retro feel of the images…

It’s quite a dilemma for collectors though. Eat them? Photograph them? Try to find some sort of high tech preservation method?

    My personal favorite:

  • Knit Thyroid

    January 4th, 2010

I’ve actually toiled over the best way to make a knit thyroid gland (since I, and a few people very close to me, have had problems with the pesky little thing). I think Ben Cuevas found the magic design…incorporate the throat/spine!

    See other shots here.

  • Caffeinated Animals

    January 2nd, 2010

Designed to promote their Kofli collection (which features coffee on the inside), these brilliant ads from Italian chocolate company Zaini feature a series of caffeinated animals.

I think I’d have a wonderful time modifying standard chocolates to look more like these.

Wishing you all a wonderful, healthy, happy 2010.

  • Chair Socks

    January 1st, 2010

Most people think of giving chairs “personality” with slip covers or cushions. But why not give them some socks to wear?

A novel idea, indeed (perhaps not for a living room, but for a more casual area). My only objection is the price. I could make these for a few bucks each, and they tally up to $22 per pair, plus shipping.

So…if anyone wants custom chair socks for dirt cheap, you know who to ask.
