  • IFC T-Shirts

    January 30th, 2010

I’m pretty entertained by the current NY IFC Center shirts on display; indie film directors revered in the style of rock band logos.

If you’re a metal fan AND you’re into indie film, it’s your lucky day. I’d like that Herzog shirt.

    You can get them here.

  • E.B. Glassworks

    January 29th, 2010

Although E.B. Glassworks is home to many lovely ornaments, I’m partial to these flamework robots:

    Romance!

    Rayguns!

    …Self Propelling!

Flameworking is a type of glassblowing that uses a gas-fueled torch to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. Once in the molten state the glass is formed by blowing and shaping using a variety of tools and hand movements over the open flame.

    See more glass creations here.

  • Gaylord the Talking Dog

    January 29th, 2010

As I get my bearings after a busy few days, please enjoy a short video.

I credit Rifftrax for unearthing this vintage gem.

What could excite a child more than an anatomically awkward, lethargic animatronic dog with a questionable name, lumbering along in slow motion at the tug of a leash?

  • Stay Tuned

    January 28th, 2010

I just enjoyed a rare mini-vacation in NYC and am preparing a NYC megapost of oddities. Should be up tomorrow!

  • Cartoon Makeovers

    January 26th, 2010

Some of you are probably sick of me writing about the soul-less characteristics of modern popular animation. I do give kudos for technical prowess, but animated characters are becoming increasingly homogenized. My fellow children of the 80’s may be disappointed to see how our classic cartoons have been made over recently.

Take Strawberry Shortcake, for example. It appears she has lost weight, and lost her signature curls, freckles and bloomers:

Rainbow Brite is another example, seen here sporting a more slender sophisticated look:

Oh Hello, Dora the Explorer. I know nothing about you since you were not part of my childhood, but at least you look just like everyone else (save for the slightly darker skin tone):

Even TROLL DOLLS, the epitome of ugly, follow the formula.

    Then:

    Now:

Haven’t had enough? How about a dose of sex appeal in your raisins? Check out the progression of the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl over the years:

So it appears that there is only one look for females in popular culture nowadays: very thin, huge eyes, small nose, lustrous straight hair, clear skin, large breasts, narrow waist…and no discernible personal characteristics. I hate to think of the message this is sending to young girls. In my opinion, uniqueness should be celebrated, not systematically erased from popular culture.

I miss the days when characters had…character.

  • Biology Today

    January 24th, 2010

I love old text books. Before my favorite thrift store shut down, I used to browse outdated volumes for the purpose of fun information and unintentional kitsch. But I never came across anything this amazing.

These come from Biology textbooks, 1972. Was being a science major back then really this psychedelic?

    A uterus?

    Wow…

See the rest of the set here.

  • Drip Hooks

    January 24th, 2010

I’m sure there is a long list of horror that features blood dripping from walls (though strangely the one that comes to mind for me is an old Tales from the Darkside episode about an apartment building that was a live entity, fed daily through the garbage disposal).

If you’d like to recreate the effect in your home, consider these drip hooks:

They do come in white, for the less morbidly inclined:

Various colors in a row would be great for an art studio.

  • Media Storage Tower

    January 23rd, 2010

I’ve been in an odd musical format limbo for years. Half of my music is digitized, half is lying around in giant CD booklets which I used to spend hours painstakingly organizing. The cases? Oh, that’s anybody’s guess. It’s now overwhelming to keep track of my massive music collection, even digitally.

This amazing 50″ X 76″ CD Storage Tower makes me miss the days when music took up space. Organizing CDs was a sweet agony.

This one’s for you, Ronnie and Lulu!

  • Image Odyssey: Thomas Kinkade Mashups

    January 23rd, 2010

The world knows Thomas Kinkade as the “Painter of Light.” His work is so charming, so emotionally soothing that it’s borderline unnerving.

A post over at Monster Brains prompted me to seek out “Thomas Kinkade mashup” artwork.

    This one is my favorite:

It appears that a number of people have bastardized Kinkade’s glowing, idyllic scenes (a few in response to a contest held on SomethingAwful.com).

    For the Lovecraft fans…

Expect a roundup of actual products made with Kinkade’s art during the holidays, because they can be unintentionally hilarious (like this snowman cult leader who appears to have devoured an entire village).

  • Buff Monster

    January 22nd, 2010

Buff Monster clearly shares my love of the pink and black color combo (and my love of all things sweet and sinister).

Step into his world for bunches of bubbling, oozing, sticky sweet creatures…sometimes with fangs and/or shooting beams of destruction.

    More here.
