  • Laurie Lipton: Weapons of Mass Delusion

    May 16th, 2010

One of my favorite artists, Laurie Lipton has a new exhibit at Corpro Gallery.

The series is a haunting, satirical look at industrialization, celebrity, consumerism and the effects of mass produced culture.

She draws upon iconic images of perky retro housewives, juxtaposed with the cracking tangled mess behind the facade…

I’m very impressed with the demonic, anesthetized cult quality.

I just want to post them all, because they are all fantastic! See the rest here.

  • Novel-T

    May 15th, 2010

As a tiny picked-last-in-gym-class woman, I can’t wear a “sporty” shirt without instantly turning myself into a walking piece of ironic comedy. However, I could wear these Novel-T shirts with pride! Literary geekiness FTW!

They have some great authors. I’d love to see Huxley, Nabokov and Orwell in the collection too.

    See more here.

  • I Need Your Skull

    May 14th, 2010

I can’t believe I will most likely have to miss the opening reception of I Need Your Skull next week at Brooklyn’s MF Gallery. It’s a collection of skull themed art, with some truly awesome participants.

I owe the gifted Angie Mason a cupcake! Raincheck, my dear…

    Some other sneak peeks:

I suppose there is a TINY chance I’ll be able to make it (there’s an airport pickup involved though…and that is a sacred bond of trust on cannot break). If you can, go support these guys!

  • Lago Divan

    May 14th, 2010

What I love about these pieces of modular furniture by Lago is the appearance of floating.

Don’t they seem to be hovering over the floor?

  • Jon Hoffman

    May 12th, 2010

We all know I’m a sucker for brains in art…Looking at Jon Hoffman’s work was like hitting pay dirt! Oodles of lovely anthropomorphized brains…

This one has earned a spot on my wall:

These brains have personality. They are contemplative, artistic, sinister…

I really like the concept of brains with wings, metaphorically.

    Isn’t this fellow romantic?

Although I’m just featuring the brains, Jon has an awesome portfolio of varied subject matter (be sure to check out his caricatures of some famous film icons). He was also part of the Crewest Gallery Valentine Charity I posted about. Hoping to collaborate on future charity work!

    See more here and here.

  • Dinosaur Ballet

    May 12th, 2010

Why does Dinosaur Ballet make me so happy whenever I watch it? I just rediscovered this video after many months…

  • Xia Xiao Wan

    May 10th, 2010

At first glance, I thought these images were sculptures.

Xia Xiao Wan constructs 3D images with the use of multiple flat glass panes. Inspired by X-ray technology, he uses pencil and glass paint to create this amazing effect.

Some of this work reminds me of the nightmarish sliced horse in the movie The Cell.

  • Alchemist Keyboard

    May 9th, 2010

I’m currently swooning over Datamancer’s Alchemist Keyboard.

The side lighting is wired into the scroll lock LED and turns on with a press of the scroll lock key. It is a USB keyboard, but because the lighting is hooked into the scroll lock function, this keyboard is designed for a PC, not a Mac. The function keys display the elemental symbols of the various metals used in the construction of the keyboard, as well as a few others. The tilde and number keys display the symbols for the sun, moon and the planets. The symbols for Earth, Air, Fire and Water are found on the arrow keys and the number pad uses stylized Roman numerals. The Enter and Shift keys are labeled with the symbols for Alchemical processes like mixing, stirring, combining, etc.

    Datamancer is simply brilliant.

  • Butterfly Wing Mosaics

    May 9th, 2010

This church in Ikitsuki, Japan contains a collection of stained glass windows constructed from the wings of over 30,000 butterflies.

I’m conflicted. The designs are lovely and painstakingly crafted…but I can’t get around the idea of 30,000 butterflies dying for them!

  • Bone Shoes

    May 9th, 2010

The source is in Russian, so I can’t pinpoint the creator, but I think a pair of bone shoes like these would be perfect for an event like the Mutter Ball in Philly (sadly, there are not many links of public pictures posted).

Definitely best in black, in my opinion, but…

And, although I have an uncommon aversion to feet and you’d be hard pressed to find me brandishing my toes (just a personal preference, not a foot deformity), I must post these for the sake of completeness. Ugh…toes. I can’t look too closely.

Anyone have a good saw and a prosthetic spine I could borrow?
