  • Adorable Japanese Trademarks

    August 4th, 2010

Pink Tentacle just posted a nice little collection of logos from the Japanese Figure Trademark database. A few of my favorites…

  • Bohyun Yoon

    August 2nd, 2010

I give you Structure of Shadow, an installation by Bohyun Yoon.

“This work is an installation piece in which I present a mix of male and female toy-like rubber figures hung with strings marching in one direction, one after another.”

“Hanging like puppets, the figures portray the idea of a group as opposed to an individual. A simple light and shadow trick is key in this work and becomes a metaphor for invisible power or tricks of politics in our society. When the viewer approaches the work, their weight makes this structure shake and all the figures dance.”

I’m truly amazed by how the doll parts convene into cohesive shadows.

Yoon’s experience in the Korean military inspired him to explore the ideas of agency and power.

“I want to pose a question through my work: how does reality become exquisitely animated by certain control systems such as politics, mass media, advertisement, etc.? Furthermore, I want to reveal how human beings are fragile and delicate in these environments.”

  • Arnaud de Vallois

    August 1st, 2010

Another lovely find from Pumpkin Rot. Arnaud de Vallois makes wonderfully creepy works of art. Looking at his blog started getting me excited for Halloween.

    I absolutely love this fellow…

  • Image Odyssey: Fanged Fish

    July 31st, 2010

I was inspired to seek out “fanged fish” when I saw the Dracula minnow featured in the Top Ten New Species of 2009:

A search revealed that there are indeed other kinds of fanged fish as well (most notably the African Tiger Fish)…

  • Trompe L’Oeil Door Stickers

    July 30th, 2010

These are some of the most amazing photo-realistic decorations I’ve ever seen. The illusion is remarkably successful.

Yes, they are $200 per sticker. This is definitely a decorative investment.

  • Crazy Cat Lady Goes High Fashion

    July 29th, 2010

This photo shoot is from a couple of years ago, but I just came across it. Crazy Cat Lady goes glam!

The model (Sri Tollerod) in alarmingly thin, even for a model, but it’s a unique shoot.

    See the rest here.

  • Vintage Monster Board Games

    July 28th, 2010

It’s been ages since I’ve played a board game of any kind, but I can’t help drooling over this collection of classic monster games.

  • Predator Batsu

    July 27th, 2010

Sadly, this prototype is not going to be mass produced.

We know that I have an odd compulsion to post Predator products (like this table and portrait).

  • Zdzislaw Beksinski

    July 26th, 2010

Zdzislaw Beksinski is an old favorite of mine and I was just browsing a folder I kept of his surreal, nightmarish paintings.

This introverted artist had no formal training, and managed to paint apocalyptic scenes that rival today’s digital video game art.

Unlike some of the surrealist art I post, I have NO desire to live in his imagination or fictional worlds.

I’ve always been touched by this painting in an uneasy way…

I can relate to some aspects of this man’s personality (particularly his desire to avoid the spotlight in person):

Although Beksiński’s art was often grim, he himself was known to be a pleasant person who took enjoyment from conversation and had a keen sense of humor. He was exceptionally modest and somewhat shy, avoiding public events such as the openings of his own exhibitions.
