  • Gone West…

    September 13th, 2010

Just got out to LA, where I’ll be spending some quality family time. Tomorrow I go through my gallery bookmarks and put together an LA art itinerary…I’ll be sure to share it!

I’ve spent a good deal of time out here over the last number of years, but please share your favorite LA oddities with me (art, food, stores, etc.).

  • Give it to Me Straight…

    September 12th, 2010

Here is another invention that is absolute genius in its simplicity. I refuse to give up my habit of reading printed books despite the profusion of nifty E-readers emerging, and I always have a pencil in my hand for underlining and notes.

This “Constrained Ball” by Giha Woo allows the user to draw lines and measure them at the same time. So it’s not only great for simple underlining, but can be a useful design tool as well.

    Found here.

  • California Carnivores

    September 11th, 2010

California Carnivores is the largest carnivorous plant retailer in the US. The selection is truly impressive!

Venus flytraps, sundews, pitcher plants, cobra plants…and SO many more! The site is easy to search by plant type, region and climate. Plants are sold separately or in collections.

Lately I’ve been feeling like I’d get a lot of satisfaction from cultivating a little garden. Perhaps I should include some of these. Anyone had experience with carnivorous plants?

  • Headless Designs

    September 10th, 2010

Rarely do I get a chance to feature exceptional toilet art, but Headless Designs has some toilet seats that are almost too nice to actually use.

Classy, kitschy, funky, rock n’ roll…there’s something for everyone (well, maybe not everyone, but there is some thematic variety).

People out there actually buy golden or marble toilets. I say, support art instead.

    See the toilet gallery here.
Other product galleries (hair brushes, tissue boxes, pet items, plaques, etc.) here.

  • Abandoned Russian Clinics

    September 9th, 2010

There is a huge photo set over at English Russia containing images from abandoned medical clinics.

Models, toys, antiquated devices and chemicals…it seems that time just stopped here, and all fell into decay.

I’m surprised that these ghosts of medicine were not all stolen from the premises.

    See many more here.

  • In Surrealism, No One Can Hear You Scream

    September 8th, 2010

Just wanted to share this wonderful little piece from PARA ABNORMAL.

    Magritte meets Alien…perfect.

PARA ABNORMAL previously featured here as part of my Halloween countdown.

  • Telegram Stop

    September 8th, 2010

I love paper. I love things made of paper. Hard copy books, letters, postcards, origami…you name it.

Here’s a site for my fellow anachronistic lovers of pressed tree pulp: Telegram Stop.

Once upon a time, telegrams were the only means of transmitting written messages over distance without physically transporting letters. Most kids today will probably never even learn the history of telegraphy.

    Send your own from here.

  • Period Table Roundup

    September 7th, 2010

Gather ’round, Geeklings! Crooked Brains just posted a fantastic roundup of various periodic table renditions. They included the Periodic Table duvet cover I posted previously.

    Some other favorites:

One of the finest nerd mobiles I’ve laid eyes on!

    Periodic table of cupcakes:

I would absolutely hang this in my kitchen.

    Literalism, FTW!

    Amazing craftsmanship…

    See the rest here.

And if you missed it, check out the Periodic Table of Fictional Elements.

  • Jake’s Chop Shop

    September 6th, 2010

Anyone into Hot Rod or Kustom Kulture should check out Jake’s Chop Shop.

I have a feeling the gallery photos don’t do justice to how awesome these custom beds, sofas, chairs and other items really are.

    See more here.

I think there are actually more photos on the myspace link than the standard website.

  • PressaRussa

    September 5th, 2010

I just stumbled upon PressaRussa on Etsy. What an adorable (and sometimes mildly subversive) collection of letterpress creations.

Who could refuse an invitation like this? Love it…
