Not only am I infinitely interested in the human condition, but it’s always fascinating to see how artist represent mental, physical or scientific concepts.
This series of minimalist posters representing various mental afflictions comes from Graphic Patrick.
Yuri Zupancic is a multi-talented artist who created a fabulous series of microchip paintings (often using handmade brushes constructed from his own eyelashes).
Zupancic describes the project beautifully…
“Smaller and Faster” has replaced “Bigger and Better” as the leading catchphrase of commodities. Things seems to be changing swiftly as every aspect of our lives is being affected by the electronic revolution. I reflect on questions and inspirations of our time with my miniature paintings on microchips. I strive for poetic efficiency through tiny images which strike great metaphorical chords when painted on microchips -the building blocks of the digital age.
The biggest frontier I see today is where nature and technology overlap. Mankind and our extensions (i.e. computers, cities) are essentially natural occurrences, thus move and evolve in the same dynamic patterns as the rest of the world. My paintings on microchips are an attempt to broaden our perspective of modern electronics and acknowledge their position as extensions of the human mind and human nature.
I’m swooning over this mirror neuron piece:
He does regular paintings as well. The merging of classical, modern and technological themes leaves the viewer delightfully suspended between conceptual constructs and vastly different worlds…yet it all comes together.
My apologies to vegetarians for this one, but it’s too spectacular to pass up. Burgers Here and There is on a mission to adorn and transform a typical burger into 192 cultural representations (one for each country recognized by the UN).
The project began as a way for the author/chef to introduce her father to new flavors in a “non-scary” fashion. The result is truly impressive. Cultural research goes into each recipe, all ingredients are purchased at local grocery stores (rather than specialty ethnic markets) for easy accessibility, and all garnishes and toppings (often including the bread or bun) are made from scratch.
Each recipe for the meat and extras is explained in detail. You will learn a great deal from this wonderful blog!
Even if you don’t choose to recreate the burgers, you must appreciate the dedication and extensive effort behind these recipes. Bravo!
Are you ready for the puppet show of the year? Puppets are not just for children I assure you. I found a great post detailing the as-yet elusive production of The Narrative of Victor Karloch.
The Narrative of Victor Karloch is a non-profit traveling stage show presented in the style of an eerie Victorian triptych puppet theater. The three original stories in the show are about 15 minutes in length and are written in the classic gothic horror tradition of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, M.R. James and Algernon Blackwood. The show benefits The Art of Elysium, a charity that encourages artists to help children battling serious medical conditions.
[The show] uses 30″ tall rod puppets, traditional shadow puppetry (woodcuts designed by Eisner Award-winning graphic novel artist Gary Gianni), rear-projected elements and full scale insert props to present the adventures of Victor Karloch, an alchemist, scholar, and ghost hunter, as he battles the supernatural forces of the Unknown.
Here is the trailer:
I can’t wait for this production!
I’m not much of a facebooker, but I don’t want to miss information and show listings so I actually joined the film page here.
Check out more info about the production and the star-studded cast here.
Michihiro Matsuoka creates fantastic sculptures; biomechanical steampunk creatures who appear to be made of metal (but are actually clay, assorted objects and acrylic!).
Aren’t they adorable? I’d like a tank full of them that simulates an underwater scene.
Just a quick announcement: I’ve revamped my blog contact/email so there will be no more waiting weeks or months for a reply (I hope!). The new method should be much more efficient.
I sincerely apologize for my previous lengthy delays in replying to comments and messages.
