  • Picturing North Korea

    May 18th, 2011

With recording devices (even mobile phones) banned at customs, and the staggeringly small number of people who have ever willingly traveled to North Korea, the country remains shrouded in mystery.

All visitors are carefully monitored and led by guides, who frequently speak of the country’s achievements. Great airs are put on in shockingly empty public spaces, often lavishly decorated with displays of abundance.

It is as if the entire world exists (and is scripted) for the single person currently touring it. Charlie Crane managed to get a rather surreal photo set.

The stillness and pristine order are disconcerting, like a giant movie set no one is using.

See the rest of the photo set here.

I HIGHLY recommend you watch The Vice Guide to Travel’s North Korea episode. It is on Netflix instant, or you can access it by clicking the link below.

The Vice Guide to Travel: North Korea (WATCH THIS!)

This film will blow your mind. I guarantee it. I spent a good half of it with my jaw dropped, and if you read this blog regularly you know how much it takes to shock me.

  • Saul Hernandez

    May 17th, 2011

I could have sworn I posted this series of sculptures by Saul Hernandez.

When posed, the human skeleton seems remarkably lifelike. It’s as if we naturally superimpose expression and mood.

I’ll take this one perched on my tombstone:

  • Chad Wasser

    May 14th, 2011

Chad Wasser creates what one may call “biomorphic” art.

These forms are rather like scientific Rorschach blots; somewhere between bacteria, organic forms, and petri dish cultures.

For fleeting moments my brain wants to think it recognizes creatures or specimens in these images…a sign of work well done.

  • The Physog Family

    May 13th, 2011

“Game Nights” seem to be a popular trend these days. I love to proudly show up with this one (manufactured circa 1930) in my arms.

The box boasts unlimited fun. Do you even doubt it?

  • Steve Lambert

    May 12th, 2011

Steve Lambert is quite an interesting artist with a variety of thought provoking projects.

    Amazing sign:

We are friends of irony and contradiction here on this blog…

    From the artist statement:
For me, art is a bridge that connects uncommon, idealistic, or even radical ideas with everyday life. I carefully craft various conditions where I can discuss these ideas with people and have a mutually meaningful exchange. Often this means working collaboratively with the audience, bringing them into the process or even having them physically complete the work.

I want my art to be relevant to those outside the gallery – say, at the nearest bus stop – to reach them in ways that are engaging and fun. I intend what I do to be funny, but at the core of each piece there is also a solemn critique. It’s important to be able to laugh while actively questioning the various power structures at work in our daily lives.

I may consider using this as a gift packaging technique, to convey the simple sincerity of giving a present.

The ultimate challenge for an introvert like me:

  • Jeremie Fleury

    May 9th, 2011

I checked out Jeremie Fleury’s website after seeing a piece of his in the Edward Scissorhands 20th Anniversary Group Show.

This series of “Lost Puppets” definitely belongs in my Candy Coated Nightmares category!
