  • Creatures from El

    September 1st, 2011

These sculptures by Creatures from El are unique, magical hybrids of biology and design.

Each sculpture can be customized in a variety of ways…

I wonder how the designs take their shape; to what degree they are planned and what degree the shape and forms simply emerge as part of the creation process.

I would love to have this one perched on my desk to keep me company:

  • Let’s Get Googly: A Collaborative Project

    August 31st, 2011

I recently posted my whimsical decision to bedeck my honey bear with googly eyes on the spice rack.

I hadn’t given it a second thought until my awesome friend Lindsay sent me a photo of how she took the idea and ran with it:

This got me thinking of how fun it would be to get a giant collection of googly-eyed household items in any form my readers saw fit. I’d like to create an album of these and share it when/if there are substantial contributions.

I know not everyone has googly eyes lying around, just waiting to be affixed to random objects, but if you do…send a picture! Go bring something to life! You can email me the photos: shewalkssoftlyblog (at) gmail (dot com).

HAVE FUN! And spread the word if you know any crafty folks…

  • Desktop Goodies 8/30

    August 30th, 2011

Let me preface this by saying I have not had Internet for four days due to Hurricane Irene. My entire town and surrounding areas are still without it and we don’t know when it (or other media/communications) will be restored. I feel VERY lucky to have electricity right now. I drove to the closest place I could find to get online for a moment, and will try to do so again as soon as possible. In the meantime…

This made my day, because outside of saying it myself I’ve never seen the phrase “Zoologically incorrect”…and it’s a favorite.

    Peeeeeeek-a-Boooooo!

    Another unsettling Peek-a-Boo:

Think about this next time someone uses the fine colloquialism “He/she’ll have my head on a platter!”

    This actually got printed:

You might be living in an insane, surrealist dictatorship if your “Dear Leader” is plastered on boxes of tongue scrapers…and walks by to inspect them for quality.

    Awww…

Go ahead Betty…one Business Casual Angel Donut won’t hurt…

    Yep.

The comic panel of my life (books rule!):

The female of this species probably takes a ages doing her makeup in the morning.

And speaking of other species…we will never be as awesome as this guy…

I’ll leave you with this, folks…

  • Belkemigi

    August 28th, 2011

The anatomically influenced mixed media collages on the Belkemigi site remind me very much of the things I put together.

Now that I think about it, some people have even gotten handmade birthday cards from me that look like this.

    See more here.

  • Hurricane Fighter Plane

    August 27th, 2011

Quick announcement: I’m not sure what the weekend’s impending hurricane will do to my power lines or internet access, so if I disappear from this blog for any length of time…blame this feisty lady, headed my way.

Just dance to this until I get back…

  • Vanessa Prager

    August 26th, 2011

I once went through a small phase of doing art/collage work on vintage yellowed book pages. I enjoy the idea of using something other than a blank canvas or piece of paper. Vanessa Prager uses blue and red ballpoint pen on blank music sheets.

I like her selective omissions of color.

  • Scott Moore

    August 25th, 2011

Scott Moore incorporates two perspectives in his delightfully not-to-scale retro style oil paintings.

As much as I admire the technique and surreality, I must admit that my first thought was “I’d love to be a tiny woman running around with that massive food!”

I imagine sinking into giant pillowy donuts…swimming in cocoa…doing my neuroscience work on a pile of toast…

    See more in the galleries.

  • Sleeping on the Moon

    August 24th, 2011

Here is another one of those items I’d love to have if I had ANY space to put it. There’s something almost lonely, yet peaceful and beautiful about a moon body pillow.

This reminds me of a small dialog I had with a friend many years ago.

Me: Sometimes I feel like I’m on my own planet.
Friend: Yes, but you are the ruler of that planet.

I’d like to combine this with one of those celestial projectors that casts constellations on the walls (if anyone has a good suggestion for a fairly inexpensive one, please share!).

The company also makes a smaller size, which for some reason I find less appealing…though rather inspirational as an item I could make myself (I did make astronomy pillows when I was in college).

I live alone…and I still do things like this for the fun of it.

    Caption, anyone?

  • Image Odyssey: Victorian Flea Circus

    August 22nd, 2011

I have no idea why I decided to seek out “Victorian Flea Circus” images. Just a whim. I’ve had stranger ones.

Not all of these images are Victorian, obviously. I just used the search term because I wanted to find flea circuses with that special antique feel.

    A little flea circus info.
