  • Embroidery Everywhere

    September 10th, 2012

Embroidery Everywhere has one of the most extensive selections of embroidery design I’ve ever seen in an independent shop.

Whether you seek pretty, cute, geeky or dark and elegant (I *may* be partial to the latter two), there are plenty of wonderful patterns to choose from.

You can choose the background fabric color for all designs as well.

    See more here.

  • The Rice Hat Samurai

    September 9th, 2012

the Rice Hat Samurai has handmade pendants for the geek with fine taste.

Would you care for a Dalek to go with that evening dress?

Perhaps a dash of Star Trek for the discriminating feminine nerd?

And I actually quite like this abstract design as well.

  • Snow White’s Heart in a Box

    September 8th, 2012

This lovely project was part of an online craft swamp. The request? “Snow White’s heart in a box.”

In the Wicked Forest Matchbox swap, my second partner wanted Snow White’s heart in a box. In the story, the evil queen orders a huntsman to take Snow White deep into the forest, murder her and bring her heart back to the queen. He can’t bring himself to do it and kills a doe instead and presents the queen with the deer’s heart in a beautiful box.

Look at that heart and interior detail! All in a matchbox! Great job, Cackle.

  • The Mad Doctor, 1933

    September 7th, 2012

To me, we are officially into “Halloween season” so I figured we’d get warmed up with a spooky little animated treat that would have been appropriate for Vintage Lab Week.

In 1933, Disney released this short animation: Mickey Mouse- The Mad Doctor

There are so many excellent still frames to grab. I have a feeling I’m going to go back and pause every few seconds for a screen capture.

  • Nintendo Knitting Machine

    September 6th, 2012

I would love to get my hands on some more old and/or rejected pitch ideas from famed toy and gaming companies. The Nintendo Knitting Machine has been described as “one least genuinely enthusiastic demos” in NES history.

But the catch phrase is just so priceless:

Would you want to turbocharge your knitting with electronic assistance, or is this the very antithesis of knitting’s leisurely nature?

Short blurb on the product here.

  • Tiffany Liu

    September 5th, 2012

How sweet is the darkness (or perhaps…how dark is the sweetness) in Tiffany Liu’s paintings.

    The monster has eaten everything…

  • Eszenyi Gábor

    September 4th, 2012

Wow…Eszenyi Gabor’s architectural sculptures are rather amazing.

Strange collages of style and form blend together in these creations (though I do have a predilection for odd angular towers). Perhaps my favorite attribute is that these structures look cobbled together with real materials…a far cry from un-textured architectural models that may be gorgeous but lack a certain “lived in” quality that makes one almost believe an imaginary troupe of tiny builders is responsible.

In addition, they cast shadows which are in and of themselves works of art.

    See more here.

  • Maria Rubinke

    September 3rd, 2012

Hello, everyone! I had a phenomenal guest author last week, but I’ve missed it here. What better way to express the maddening frustration of a hiatus (and the fact that my posts might still be light on the verbiage for a while to come) than with these sculptures by Maria Rubinke?

Although I have had health issues for quite sometime, these recent ones have affected my typing AND talking ability so I’ve been…*nudge nudge, wink, wink* tearing my hair out.

Been told in the past that I have a bleeding heart, metaphorically at least…

I didn’t see an artist site with a quick search glance, but see a few more bloody innards of innocence at the Source.

  • Vintage Lab Week: The Apparatus

    September 3rd, 2012

What is the appeal of a laboratory? Its potential for discovery? The experiments? Or the cool apparatus?

The experimental pharmacology laboratory of the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories. 1909.

One thing is sure–these images add danger, excitement and mystique to something certain; Science!

  • Vintage Lab Week: The Real Deal

    September 2nd, 2012

I have more images on this subject, so I am going to extend the week a little while guest hosting. As exciting as Mad Scientists’ laboratories can be in movies, perhaps they would not exist in too much form if the real deal labs were not as fantastic.

1920’s research lab. Pretty cool–enough to cause Pavlovian responses for lab geeks.

    Stay tuned for more!
