Wim Delvoye

I was *beyond* excited to view Wim Delvoye’s collection of Gothic anatomical stained glass windows. I have had so many x-rays and scans over the years that I am, most likely, radioactive by now. I always wished to keep my x-ray prints for various art pieces. It’s thrilling to see bones and organs immortalized in this classic fashion.

Meatscapes and Machine-Animals

On the tail of my last post, it feels appropriate to post about Nicholas Lampert who created a lovely series of retro inspired “Meatscapes.”

In the series (which would make a dynamite postcard collection), slabs of meat quite conspicuously take the place of natural land formations.

Words fail me…and that’s rare.

Natalie Shau’s exquisitely macabre art pieces leave me speechless, wishing I could weave together words that do her justice. But I can only stare and marvel.

I highly recommend her work to anyone who enjoys haunting eye candy.
Zen Cupcakes

I’ve always had a spiritual reverence for the sensory experience of good food. lorijohernandez has posted some cupcakes on her flickr site that evoke mandalas.

I’ve long since been fascinated by the incredibly rich and varied symbolism of mandalas: circular images used as an aid to meditation, transcendence and enlightenment in numerous spiritual traditions.

According to David Fontana (via Wiki), [a mandala’s] symbolic nature can help one “to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the meditator to experience a mystical sense of oneness with the ultimate unity from which the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises.”

…and a good cupcake, I feel, provides the very same experience.

I know I’m eating great food when I sense the ultimate unity of the cosmos in all its manifold forms. And I’m happy to report that this is a fairly common occurrence.

Jacek Yerka

Before the arrival of the Internet in my house many years ago, I found myself glued to one of Jacek Yerka’s books in Barne’s and Noble.

Yerka’s paintings embody the warmth of childhood memory spliced with fantasy, creatures and feats impossible in time and space as we know it. His skill for realism is free from the constraints of physics and dimension. Worlds intertwine, float, twist and tumble.

This place looks like paradise to me:

I think after Pan’s Labyrinth I’ll see any Guillermo del Toro project. In the wake of this fantastic monster I can’t wait to see what he does with the new Hellboy characters.

Wired recently featured an article on the film realizations of Hellboy sketches, and the book chronicling the collaboration of Del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.
Satoru Aoyama

I’m totally floored by Satoru Aoyama. At first glance I thought this was photography, but it’s EMBROIDERY!

It’s causing significant dissonance in my brain as I try to decipher SOME trace of needle and thread, to no avail. This is by far the most impressive stitch work I’ve ever seen.

Too bad more of his work isn’t gathered online.
