Daniel Danger: They Will Take it Back

There’s a proliferation of great art shows this summer. I wish I could be in multiple places at once.

Pretty much every image in Daniel Danger’s They Will Take it Back (Gallery 1988, Los Angeles) made me stop and stare.

Overgrown, shadow-laden works that instill just the right amount of sparse, rural unease in the viewer. Some are stark and ominous, others incorporate mild surreal elements.

I admire his use of humans as secondary subjects. They are small, insignificant, powerless in their surroundings. While the scenery has a dark beauty, I cannot claim I would like to be dropped in the middle of it. There’s something menacing in the air…
