My Favorite Haiti Fundraising Project

Posted in charity, music, music video with tags , , on March 3, 2010 by shewalkssoftly

I admit it: I have neither heard nor watched the video for the We Are the World remake.

I did come across another musical tribute that blew my mind. Shane MacGowan of the Pogues gathered a truly amazing bunch of artists for a remake of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put A Spell On You’. The song features Nick Cave, Mick Jones (The Clash), Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Chrissie Hynde, Cait O’Riordon, Paloma Faith, Eliza Doolittle and Johnny Depp.

The result is a captivating, raw, soulful collaboration (how could it not be with those folks behind it?). I will absolutely buy this single to show my support.

ALL proceeds go to Concern, a charity who have provided assistance to some of the poorest countries in the world including Haiti, even before the earthquake struck.

Techno Chicken

Since Americans eat an astonishing amount of turkey the last week in November, do you think the chickens are doing celebratory dances like this?

(Ugh…now I’m lamenting the conditions under which chickens are typically raised in this country…no room for dancing at all).

The Hypothalamus Song

Metal and the Hypothalamus gland…two of my favorite things! I’m overjoyed that someone made this (and grateful for the subtitles!):

The Hypothalamus is so underappreciated. I’m glad someone paid tribute.

Retro Computer Bohemian Rhapsody

Posted in geek, music, music video, retro, technology with tags , , , , on April 23, 2009 by shewalkssoftly

Wow…this clip stirs technological and musical nostalgia in a way that makes my little heart flutter. There’s a real sweetness to these outmoded babies chugging along in harmony. I want so much to believe that my gigantic pile of obsolete electronics do this after I’m asleep at night.

There are no effects or sampling. Simply:

*Atari 800XL as the lead piano/organ sound
*Texas Instruments TI-99/4a as lead guitar
*8 Inch Floppy Disk as Bass
*3.5 inch Harddrive as the gong
*HP ScanJet 3C for all vocals.

The Making of Closer

It was 1994. I stayed up past my bedtime, delicately dozing off in front of the TV in hopes of catching the Closer Video. Nine Inch Nails entranced me in a visual universe that became a catalyst for many of my developing interests.

I had a sixth sense for this video. The barely audible sound of that hissing heartbeat could jar me out of the deepest sleep. I had to watch.

015

My heart goes out to my mother. She got wind of the lyrics and felt her tiny tween was headed for a life of violence, promiscuity and general depravity…none of which I ever even dabbled in. My sober, stable mind was such a wonderland in itself; imagination was all I needed. For all I cared, the lyrics could have been about lollipops and jellybeans.

I came across this great behind the scenes documentary about the video, which may not be for everyone but is a must see for those who love the aesthetics of the Closer video. You’ll see what went into creating images like this:

…and hear director Mark Romanek discuss everything from Mary Poppins to rotting meat.

THE MAKING OF CLOSER

I just realized that half the tags I use in this blog can apply to this post. Ever feel like something was made for you…even before YOU were aware of it?

The Body They Built to Fit the Car

Ah, the video montage…a beloved art form that distills hours of uninteresting footage into a hyper-concentrated cocktail of pure

Here, the band Blurt showcases a series of vintage exercise machines and beauty treatments.

Funny how easy it is to scoff at these “primitive” measures when current methods involve paralyzing poison injections, plastic threads under the skin that yank the face in different directions, and the now commonplace bulbous sacks of silicone.

And just for fun, see how Strong Bad makes a montage. Nowhere else can you hear the lyric “You’re a girl…or maybe a wagon, filled up with pancakes.”

Arc Attack!

ArcAttack has it all: Tesla coils, creepy circus music…well, those are the big selling points for me anyway.

ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation (an HVDJ set up) to generate an ‘electrifying’ audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA System while two specially designed DRSSTC’s (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments.

These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt which put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers.

Whether or not you are a fan of the music, this video some stellar shadow puppetry using only human hands. Brilliant editing.

Sil Van Der Woerd

Posted in film, music video with tags , on January 3, 2009 by shewalkssoftly

I’m a big fan of Sil Van Der Woerd’s work; graceful, ethereal, flowing scenes infused with darkness. Symbolism, technology, sensuality, energy…

This entrancing video shows Lolly Jane Blue traveling down through layers of the earth. Technically, it’s safe for work, but an onlooker might not think so from a quick glance.

See a higher quality version here.

If you like beautiful experimental short film (set to music), I also highly recommend Swim and Duet. Both build delightfully toward the end.

Holiday Horrors Week: Abomination Party

I’ll finish off the week with some features from our own Holiday Abomination Party, held in Norristown, PA.

The tree was indeed unique, topped with the household deity of choice: The Flying Spaghetti Monster (handmade by Matt).

When you squeeze the chicken, a watery sack filled with an egg emerges from it’s nethers.

We called this “Pain Killer Penguin” since it glows a pulsating red like the human diagrams in nearly every medication commercial:

I was blessed by a visit from the Ornament Fairy (a.k.a Steph) as I slept, and awoke to find myself (the none-too-happy face anyway) photoshopped into a Patrick Swayze embrace!

Of course, this is a reference to the famous MST3K Patrick Swayze Christmas Song (definitely worth seeing, if you haven’t).

We “opened up our hearts and let the Patrick Swayze Christmas in”…we wish him good health this season.

Now come along with me on our Turducken cooking journey…beginning here, with this sexy thing:

See the process, start to finish, in these nicely chronicled PHOTOS.

The undisputed “star” of the party was internet sensation Chris Dane Owens. This video most certainly counts as a holiday abomination (actually, it’s an abomination for all seasons).

Printer was running out of ink, which adds to the lowbrow quality…
