Art Donovan Lamps

Donovan Design has come out with a series of wonderful steampunk lamps. As many of you know, I am loathe to use the term steampunk, but will always give credit where credit is due in terms of fine craftsmanship.

I can’t help liking certain aesthetics of the subculture I can’t entirely get behind. Story of my life, as a kaleidoscope of selected subcultural pieces!

I wouldn’t mind a few of these beauties gracing my home in various places (“wouldn’t mind” is quite an extreme understatement).

Been re-watching The Munsters this month…

Drink up!

Gorgeous.

And speaking of bats…

Hadn’t seen this vintage bag before:

Fresh baked…

Love these covers.

Beautiful bride:

Costume WIN!

Here’s lookin’ at you, kid!

Pottery Barn: Crow String Lights

Posted in decoration, halloween, home, lighting, wish list with tags , , , , on September 22, 2012 by shewalkssoftly

Usually I feature a few items at a time from Pottery Barn or other stores that carry Halloween treats. However, these lights deserve their own post because I love them so very much.

I actually think they work better without the “Halloween” ones beneath.

Now to battle the decision of spending $30 on a few little lights…on the wish list they go…

Angler Fish Double Dose!

Posted in lighting, sea with tags , on September 16, 2012 by shewalkssoftly

I came across two great Angler Fish items in the past few days. Let’s start with a lovely lantern for the home:

…and move onto this sweet ride that was part of the VIVID Light Festival in Sydney.

More Angler Fish here and here.

Brain Bulb

Oh, how I love this energy efficient Brain Bulb from Solovyov Design.

I would very much like to have one of these in my home (and it would be rather fitting for my future office as well).

Well, Spring is upon us here in the US. Though if Spring came to my door looking like this, you can bet I wouldn’t let it in.

Here’s a motivational poster for you fine folks:

What are the chances I could still get this T-shirt if I fill out the order form?

I believe I got this from A Wren’s Life’s Pinterest. Why aren’t there more images of people wrestling Death on medical packaging these days?

I’ve never seen a raven-haired man with a stark white beard, but now I know there’s a solution of such a man wishes to coordinate his whiskers.

One thing any man of mine will not have to worry about (if he doesn’t getting me going about art or science):

Quite possibly the best tombstone epitaph I’ve ever seen:

What happens when acorns are laced with cocaine…

No idea what these are (maybe one of you will know), but I think I like them.

The only way to travel…

This gets major points for being two things: 1) zombie nesting dolls 2) A CAKE.

And speaking of food, I shouldn’t have seen these…because now I will undoubtedly surprise unsuspecting guests with them one day (I’d carry them out facing backwards so the faces are extra shocking).

Though I don’t use much glitter in my projects these days, I very much relate to this (from Para Abnormal):

I’ve been quite under the weather lately, and this piece fairly accurately describes how I feel.

My very favorite closet light:

And lastly…we knew someone would jump on the chance to do this.

Alnwick Garden is now on my destination list.

The one kind of “medicine” I’d really like to overdose on:

Amazing outfits ahead! This was taken in 1915 (probably what I would have worn if I were around in that time period):

And now an incredible “sport dress” from 1885:

So, is this pretty much the greatest sweater of all time…or THE greatest sweater of all time?

And now for the requisite skeletons that somehow make it into all of these posts. I may have actually featured this before, but I just love it so much.

Be careful when someone asks to “pick your brain.” It may be literal.

With tooth-care proofs of purchase, one could acquire this fabulous dental clock from Zonweiss (well, a rather long time ago anyway):

Mmm…I love the hazy glow of this photo…

When writing a letter to me, please address it as such:

This is how I lift my elephants, too.

I do enjoy de-contextualized slices of vintage printed work…

Absolutely a cause for celebration!

Bats: is there anything they CAN’T do?

Oddly, a few images of bats dealing with headless things grace my desktop at the moment.

This one puts me in a good mood, instantly.

I confess to a bit of library corner lust for this globe lamp:

And these rings are wonderful (yet another example, like most of these images, of lack of sourcing in micro-blogs…does anyone know who makes these?):

I’ll close this post with a monstrously sweet image by McLean Kendree.

Paul Cocksedge: Bourrasque

Posted in installations, lighting, sculpture with tags , , on January 3, 2012 by shewalkssoftly

What a beautiful installation by Paul Cocksedge:

200 sheets of electrically conducive material, each hand sculpted, appear to flutter through the air as if freed by a giant gust of wind.

This installation was constructed in the courtyard of a Lyon hotel for the annual Fête des Lumières (festival of lights).

Halloween Countdown: Desktop Treat Bag 10/25

This little baby buggy tends to circulate every year on various sites. Awww…precious.

Swoon-worthy decoration…

I’d like to see real photos of these:

These as well…

A lovely sculpture by Kate MacDowell:

Ugh…there were always the dreaded houses that dispensed awful Brach’s candy when I was a kid. No one even wanted to trade this stuff.

And arguably even worse…

(I’m not anti-raisin, but this is HALLOWEEN…who wants to gather typical lunchbox fare?)

Definitely an inspirational image for awesome kitschy decoration:

Best passive-aggressive note card ever:

Well, hello there.

One lump, or two?

This is either pretty great, or a sad sign made by a dyslexic man named Brian:

Hang on while I hyperventilate because this collection is so fantastic (wish I had the source!):

Groovy retro style pattern:

Not intended for Halloween…but amazing:

Also unrelated, but this octopus looks monstrously friendly. He’s smiling. At you.

Lena and Katya Popova

Posted in craft, dolls, lighting, sculpture with tags , , , on June 24, 2011 by shewalkssoftly

A few years ago I came across this doll photo set and left it in my “to post” folder.

To this day, I still can’t find much about Lena and Katya Popova’s mixed media doll creations (except other blog posts referencing this same set). Nevertheless, they are unique and beautiful.

I love the incorporation of lamp materials (some of which actually light up).

See the rest of the set here.
