Skelewags

Posted in art, street art with tags , on July 25, 2012 by shewalkssoftly

Skelewags is a wonderful little project where art meets environment. Creator Richard Vermaak describes his characters as having a kind of “doomed innocence.”

This started out with the search for interesting textures to use as backdrops for the scenes and quickly progressed to the point of interpreting the surfaces or objects from a different perspective.

Designing within restrictions encourages creativity and right from the start. I established rules pertaining to the creation of the Skelewags. Neither the photographs nor the environments are allowed to be altered, propped or edited in any way.

There is also an Alice in Wonderland series of designs.

I was taken aback upon looking at this because it feels like someone did a high-contrast caricature of me without my knowledge (if you doubt it, see photo on upper right). Got the hair and my spindly little limbs down…

Hanging: you’re doing it wrong.

Files, not piles.

Has anyone been to the Heinz Haunted House? If so, I want to hear everything about it. Ketchup blood everywhere?

Chocolate Covered Strychnine! I wonder if fierce convulsions and eventual asphyxiation due to paralysis of neural pathways would be enough to deter me from something covered in chocolate.

Ten Realms Within the Body (1885). So THIS is what goes on in there. I knew it.

Ma’am, you have a…oh…nevermind.

If he were mine, I’d name him “Fluffy.”

Ah, this piece of street art reminds me of my many evenings spent in the subversive act of reading…my Wild(e) Nights.

YES!

How rare to see a cute piece of street art (this one is by MORA):

A monster I’d like to meet…providing it agrees to stand still long enough for me to read its heads.

You too, sir? What a coincidence.

Yikes. It’s about to get violent.

I seriously hope this is a “brain fog” typo.

“Let go. Be afraid. You all taste so much better when you’re afraid.”

Some pretty sweet skills (no artist credited):

Mmmmm…

I believe this actually comes from a company that makes theatrical hats. Brilliant.

Now, I don’t mean to undermine someone’s “art,” but if this scrap of paper sold for $500, I picked the wrong field when I decided to study medicine.

Shida!

I’m rather fond of some of Shida!’s street art.

Fun fanged creatures, colorfully splashed across walls and outdoor surfaces on four continents thus far…

See more (divided into sets based on location and regular paintings) here.

Ojo Senor

Ojo Senor created a series of illuminated street art installations.

It’s such a simple idea, but the effect is fantastic. I need to start making more crafts that light up.

See more here.

Let’s begin this post with a luminous sunrise over the rolling hills of a meatscape…

As you may know by now, I love photos of glistening industrial structures.

Nature is amazing.

Two bits of street art that really grabbed my attention recently:

Excellent display.

He’s late for a very important date, indeed…

No idea:

Had this mode of transportation been available to me, I might have attempted to attend Sunday school…once.

I know nothing about the origin of this illustration, save for the title: “Experiment With a Unicorn Horn.”

Arguably the world’s most useful superpower:

I wonder if there’s a number around which the subject matter starts to get a bit tired (101? Really? It’s almost impressive).

Ooh…the candle makes it fancy.

A beautiful clock (it sings!) for the minimalist:

Where is this an actual problem?

I’ve saved the best for last. Here’s a great wedding greeting to send all your newlywed friends. Feel free to post your interpretations in the comments.
