I’ve actually toiled over the best way to make a knit thyroid gland (since I, and a few people very close to me, have had problems with the pesky little thing). I think Ben Cuevas found the magic design…incorporate the throat/spine!

Sorry to hear that the thyroid gland literally has you by the throat. Its job, among other things, is to help regulate the concentration of Ca+ ions in the blood that bones need in order to grow. It secretes calcitonin, a hormone that directs ostioblast bone cells to add Ca+ floating in the blood to places where ossified bone is needed. If your diet is low in Ca+, which ought to replace the used Ca+, its cousin, the parathyroid gland, secretes PTH, parathyroid hormone, that directs ostioclast bone cells to dissolve bone matrix from other places so that the blood maintains a constant 9-11 mg of Ca+ per 100 mL of blood fluid.
